And Millions of Commited, Educated Women Shall Lead Us

And Millions of Commited, Educated Women Shall Lead Us March 29, 2018

Dana Fisher, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland, has been doing research on the marches and protests since Trump took office, including last weekend’s March for Our Lives. She found that it’s women who are leading the way, educated women in particular.

In the days before and after more than two million Americans participated in the March for Our Lives, the gun-violence conversation has focused on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors and their “student movement.”…

However, the young faces of the advocates have created an assumption that “youth” and “students” are the core of the movement. My research tells a different story about who participated in the March for Our Lives — and it is more complicated and less well-packaged for prime time…

Like other resistance protests, and like previous gun-control marches, the March for Our Lives was mostly women. Whereas the 2017 Women’s March was 85 percent women, the March for Our Lives was 70 percent women. Further, participants were highly educated; 72 percent had a BA or higher.

Contrary to what’s been reported in many media accounts, the D.C. March for Our Lives crowd was not primarily made up of teenagers. Only about 10 percent of the participants were under 18.

This is not in any way meant to diminish the extraordinary leadership shown by students from Parkland and around the country, who are courageously standing up and making their voices heard. They are leading this movement. But the people responding to their calls for action are primarily women, by a nearly 3-1 margin. Men, we are failing all of them, and failing our country, if we don’t follow their lead and step up to the plate — not just on gun policy but in our opposition to Trump and the dangerous right-wing populism that put him in office.

We are the ones who shoot up schools, not women. We are the ones who open fire on crowds of people, not women. We are the ones who commit nearly all of the violence in this society, not women. And we are the ones who must put a stop to it. We are the ones who must confront the problem of toxic masculinity and all of its horrible effects. 53% of us voted for Trump. 58% of white people voted for him. 63% of white men voted for him. We have met the enemy and he is us. Time to look in the mirror and get to work. Our sisters, mothers, wives and friends are already there, waiting for us to get off our asses.
