Trump Tells Aides Not to Talk About Anti-Putin Moves March 30, 2018

NBC News reports that Trump has been telling his aides not to publicly discuss some of the recent anti-Putin actions he’s taken, even to praise and support them, because he doesn’t want to be seen as giving in to his critics when it comes to Putin and Russia. And he doesn’t want to make his buddy mad or anything.

President Donald Trump’s national security advisers spent months trying to convince him to sign off on a plan to supply new U.S. weapons to Ukraine to aid in the country’s fight against Russian-backed separatists, according to multiple senior administration officials.

Yet when the president finally authorized the major policy shift, he told his aides not to publicly tout his decision, officials said. Doing so, Trump argued, might agitate Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the officials.

“He doesn’t want us to bring it up,” one White House official said. “It is not something he wants to talk about.”…

Officials said the increasingly puzzling divide between Trump’s policy decisions and public posture on Russia stems from his continued hope for warmer relations with Putin and stubborn refusal to be seen as appeasing the media or critics who question his silence or kind words for the Russian leader.

For crying out loud, think about what this says about the man. Anyone else in his situation, being viewed as in Putin’s pocket, would be trumpeting anything and everything he did that Putin might not like in order to counter that public perception. Not Trump. His big concern is not appearing to do or say anything that might even hint that he could have been wrong about Putin and Russia’s actions. And when it comes to Ukraine specifically, remember that his people deliberately watered down language in the Republican platform calling for the very action he has now agreed to take and soften the condemnation of Russia for their invasion of Crimea and threatening of Ukraine.

His ego is that fragile. He simply cannot stand to even hint at an admission that he might have done or said anything wrong, ever. He thinks that’s a sign of strength but it’s the exact opposite, just like his bullying behavior is the exact opposite of what he thinks it is.
