In this first episode, we talk in detail about the Masterpiece Cakeshop ruling and Trump’s legal troubles. On the first case, we take a fairly deep dive into the question of why the court essentially punted on the case, how it departed completely from the kinds of analysis that the Supreme Court typically uses in such cases, and how it ignored the actual substantive questions upon which the appeal was granted in the first place.
On the subject of Trump’s legal troubles and the Mueller investigation, we take a look at some key questions. Can Trump really pardon himself? Can he refuse to testify if he is subpoenaed to do so? Can he fire Robert Mueller and end the investigation? What kind of legal trouble are his associates, like Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen, facing? We also take a broader look at how Trump’s bigotry and demagoguery got him elected and sustains his popularity with his base.
I’m really excited to be back “on the air.” Spontaneous conversation often leads to on-the-spot insights and ideas while interacting with others that I would not have thought of just writing on my own. And that’s especially true when interacting with someone really smart and knowledgeable like my co-host, Dan Ray. I hope you’ll all be tuning in.
