As Dan and I predicted on last week’s episode of Culture Wars Radio, Trump chose Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to replace Justice Kennedy on the Supreme Court. In the end, I think it was just too tempting for him to name the guy who has said that presidents should not be the target of any investigations or indictments. Basically, he put his ringer in as one of the referees in a game.
Constitutionally, I don’t expect Kavanaugh to be much different from the other conservatives on the court. He’ll line up with them well over 90% of the time. And yes, that includes overturning Roe v Wade. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that they might not overturn it. It’s history. It may happen in one fell swoop or in a series of cases that eat away at its core, but it’s gone. History. Finito. That will return the matter to the states, which will set off a political wildfire in the next few election cycles.Women are already more politically active than men, they already hate Trump, they already vote solidly Democratic and they’re already more likely to show up at the polls. But what I really hope is that this direct threat to their reproductive health energizes them even more to show up this November. Midterm elections typically have far lower turnout than presidential elections, but I really hope that changes this year. I hope this lights a fire that comes back to burn the Republicans badly.
But here’s the thing: We can’t wait for women to save this country and we can’t leave them alone to fight for reproductive freedom. We have to be on the front lines with them, fighting shoulder to shoulder. It isn’t enough to pull your weight around the house, we also need to pull our weight to get our political house in order and throw these proto-fascists out of power. You have your marching orders. Go forth and raise hell.
