Ken Starr Goes All Pollyanna Over Threat to Mueller Investigation

Ken Starr Goes All Pollyanna Over Threat to Mueller Investigation November 9, 2018

Ken Starr, the special counsel who investigated Bill Clinton, went on CNN and said that he didn’t think new Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker would do anything to threaten the Mueller investigation because that would lead Mueller to resign and set off a “firestorm” of controversy. One has to wonder what planet he’s been living on.

Starr said he believed that Whitaker wouldn’t dare interfere with the investigation, saying any bad actions would force the special counsel to resign, setting off “a firestorm”.

“Wow, Ken. I mean, that’s a pretty extreme idea, that Robert Mueller would resign in protest,” said Toobin, rolling his eyes and shaking his head as Starr presented a rosy scenario in which Whitaker was constrained by the fair-play culture of Washington D.C.

“The question that is, I think, troubling to a lot of people is why was he appointed,” Toobin continued, highlighting that Whitaker has most recently been a CNN contributor and served briefly as in Iowa. “The only thing we know about him as a public person in recent years is that he has been critical of the Mueller investigation. Is that really the qualification that an attorney general should have?”

Has Starr not been paying attention? When has Trump ever shown the slightest concern over such political and constitutional norms? He has flagrantly violated those norms at every turn, causing one scandal after another. He is a desperate man and he will do anything — absolutely anything — to get his butt out of the trap. The only thing that could potentially restrain him at all is if Congress or the courts step in and prevent him from doing it. He certainly isn’t going to be restrained by not wanting to cause a controversy. This is just pollyanna-ish fantasy world thinking.
