Fox News published an op-ed piece a few months ago by Jeremy Carl of the Hoover Institution at Stanford complaining about Starbucks’ then-new policy of allowing people to use the bathroom even if not paying customers, in response to the police being called on a black men for doing nothing wrong at all. That op-ed cited white supremacist Jared Taylor to criticize former Attorney General Eric Holder.
Media Matters recently contacted Fox News about it and they suddenly changed the citation, but without noting that the change was made or why, of course.
A FoxNews.com op-ed attacking former Attorney General Eric Holder uncritically relied on, and linked to, a piece by white supremacist Jared Taylor that accused Democrats of subjecting “whites to outright racial plunder.” Fox News changed the link after Media Matters contacted the network.
Jeremy Carl, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, wrote a May 23 FoxNews.com op-ed complaining about a Starbucks policy allowing “anyone to spend time in its stores and use restrooms regardless of whether they make a purchase.” He also criticized the company for having engaged “Eric Holder as an adviser on diversity issues,” claiming he “has a long history of making accusations of racial discrimination, often unjustified.”
As one piece of evidence against Holder, Carl linked to a January 2015 opinion piece by Jared Taylor on the white supremacist website American Renaissance.
Carl’s response to all this was quite telling, I think. He said, “One doesn’t need to link to American Renaissance to make that point, and obviously I would not have intentionally done so.” Wait, did the op-ed write itself without your knowledge? You were the one who wrote it, you must have intentionally cited Taylor and American Renaissance — unless some magic gremlin changed it after it was submitted or published. And the fact that you think this can be established without citing white supremacists and yet you did cite white supremacists says far more about you than it does about Eric Holder.
