Trump’s Bragging May Hurt Him Legally

Trump’s Bragging May Hurt Him Legally December 23, 2018

Donald Trump loves to brag. He loves to claim that he knows more about this or that subject than anyone. In reality, he knows almost nothing about virtually everything. But his bragging can sometimes get him into trouble, as it may now that video has surfaced of Trump claiming that he knows more about campaign finance laws than anyone else.

In an interview nearly two decades ago, President Donald Trump bragged about how much he knew about campaign finance law—a statement that could prove tricky, considering he’s been directly implicated in campaign finance violations to which his former lawyer has pleaded guilty…

Speaking with host Larry King, in ’99 Trump said, “I think nobody knows more about campaign finance than I do, because I’m the biggest contributor.”

So why does this matter? Because his defense in violating campaign finance laws by paying off mistresses in the heat of an election is that he was an innocent victim of a lawyer — Michael Cohen — who advised him on it. Since he doesn’t know the campaign finance laws, he had to rely on advice of counsel. He tweeted out, “I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law. He was a lawyer and he is supposed to know the law. It is called ‘advice of counsel,’ and a lawyer has great liability if a mistake is made.” So once again his big mouth may land him in legal trouble and negate the only defense he has left.
