One of Trump’s most often used rhetorical devices is to claim that other people have told him things they did not tell him. Sometimes he’s specific, sometimes it’s just that mysterious “they.” But this time he claims that ex-presidents have told him they should have built a border wall when they were in office. There is no doubt he is lying.
President Trump held a rambling, stream-of-consciousness press event Friday afternoon in the Rose Garden and made many statements that defy belief. Among them, that he’s talked with several previous presidents and they all told him they should have built a wall on the Southern border.
“This should have been done by all of the presidents that preceded me,” Trump told reporters, about building a wall.“They all know it,” he continued, adding, “some of them have told me that we should have done it,” he claimed.
Really, Donald? Which ones? Here are the options: George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama or Jimmy Carter. Not one of them have supported the border wall and, in fact, it goes strongly against what even the two Bushes believed about immigration. Or are you pulling a Nixon and talking to the portraits of past presidents hanging in the White House? Those are really the only options other than the obvious: You’re lying. Like you always are.
