Sarah Huckabee Sanders was on with Chris Wallace Sunday morning and they addressed the questions about Donald Trump refusing to release his taxes. As usual, she spread some particularly odiferous manure around. She made two ridiculous and contradictory claims. The first was Trump’s old dodge about his taxes being audited.
“The president has been clear from the beginning,” Sanders insisted. “As long as his taxes are under audit, he’s not going to release them.”
That’s a lie. His first position was that of course he would release his taxes, in fact he wanted to. Then when he won the nomination, suddenly he changed to “I’ll release them when they’re done being audited.” But that’s now nearly three years ago, they certainly aren’t still being audited. And even if they are, why not release his old returns, at least? Surely they’re done being audited. This is all a transparent pretext for not releasing them because he knows they can be used to investigate all manner of illegal activities. The second claim was — get this — that Congress can’t understand the returns so they shouldn’t get them.
“This is all about political partisanship,” she said. “This is a dangerous, dangerous road,” she added. “And, frankly Chris, I don’t think Congress, particularly not this group of congressmen and women, are smart enough to look through the thousands of pages.”
“Most of them probably don’t do their own taxes,” Sanders concluded. “And I certainly don’t trust them to look through the decades of success that the president has and determine anything.”
Yeah, and it’s not like they could bring in experts on corporate tax returns to analyze them or anything. Again, a ridiculous pretext because Trump does not want everyone to see his vast web of what I am quite certain are corrupt corporations.
