Ingraham’s Cruel Indifference to the Victims of Slavery

Ingraham’s Cruel Indifference to the Victims of Slavery June 24, 2019

There are some reasonable arguments against reparations for the descendants of slaves, a topic that is suddenly in the public eye. Rep. Shirley Jackson-Lee has submitted a bill to pay such reparations and Ta-Nehisi Coates testified before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties on the subject the other day. Laura Ingraham’s callous and repulsive response:

LAURA INGRAHAM (HOST): People would argue that the whole world, and I would, that the whole world has been reshaped by people taking other people’s land. I mean, it’s called conquest..

They want to live in a fake world. As Trump always says, “You don’t get do-overs.” No do-overs, that’s it. There was an argument, sometime — I think it was the 1980s. There was a quote, you won, we lost, that’s that. Describing world politics, we won, you lost, that’s that. That’s just the way it is.

Whether you are in favor of reparations or opposed to them, you should recognize how vile her position is. It’s also wrong, of course. We didn’t conquer Africa, we kidnapped millions of Africans and forced them to be our slaves. This response is nothing more than an arrogant taunt, the kind that Trump loves so much — “Ha ha, we won, you’re a bunch of losers!” When you combine childishness with cruelty, bigotry and indifference to the suffering of others, this is the result.
