Trump: Saying Something Bad About Something Good is ‘Not Free Speech’

Trump: Saying Something Bad About Something Good is ‘Not Free Speech’ July 15, 2019

At his fascist-filled social media summit, Trump had some very disturbing things to say about freedom of speech. He said the First Amendment does not cover the “mainstream media” anymore because they’re so “crooked” and “dishonest” and they “see something good and then…purposely write bad. If he had his way, he’s made quite clear, the First Amendment would be completely gutted.

“And we don’t want to stifle anything, we certainly don’t want to stifle free speech. But that’s no longer free speech,” said Trump. “See I don’t think that the mainstream media is free speech either, because it’s so crooked, it’s so dishonest.”

“So to me, free speech is not when you see something good and then you purposely write bad, to me that’s very dangerous speech, and you become angry at it,” said Trump. “But that’s not free speech.”

He wants a return to the days of the Sedition Act, when several newspaper editors, including Ben Franklin’s grandson Benjamin Franklin Bache, who edited a pro-Jefferson newspaper. John Adams had him thrown in jail for criticizing him under that act and that is precisely what Trump would do to his political enemies in the press and elsewhere if he could. Thankfully, the courts are far more protective of free speech and a free press today than they were previously. But if he could, Trump would be like his buddy Vladimir Putin, who routinely imprisons those who criticize him and run against him in elections. And the ones sent to prison are the lucky ones; many have been killed by Russian agents.
