Trump launched a nasty attack on Rep. Elijah Cummings, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, and the people of his district in response to Cummings’ comments about the conditions faced by refugees at the Southern border and in detention facilities, calling the situation “government-sponsored child abuse.” Trump’s tweet:
….As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place

First of all, Trump calling anyone else in the world a brutal bully is like him making fun of someone for their orange skin. I swear that man should just have one big eye in the middle of his forehead. It’s the only way he could project more than he already does. That is such a perfect description of Trump himself that every irony meter in the known universe exploded after this tweet. Second, he apparently thinks that a federal Congressman can fix things wrong with his district. He can sponsor legislation that would help all such cities, of course, but in Baltimore it’s far more about local politics than national politics. But that would require that Trump actually knows something about the reality of Baltimore, or would care at all if you tried to tell him. But he doesn’t. It’s just a handy stick to grab to beat one of his critics with.
The venerable Baltimore Sun, one of the nation’s oldest newspapers in which HL Mencken wrote columns for more than 50 years, had a scathing and pithy comeback:
This is a president who will happily debase himself at the slightest provocation. And given Mr. Cummings’ criticisms of U.S. border policy, the various investigations he has launched as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, his willingness to call Mr. Trump a racist for his recent attacks on the freshmen congresswomen, and the fact that “Fox & Friends” had recently aired a segment critical of the city, slamming Baltimore must have been irresistible in a Pavlovian way. Fox News rang the bell, the president salivated and his thumbs moved across his cell phone into action…
Finally, while we would not sink to name-calling in the Trumpian manner — or ruefully point out that he failed to spell the congressman’s name correctly (it’s Cummings, not Cumming) — we would tell the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office, the mocker of war heroes, the gleeful grabber of women’s private parts, the serial bankrupter of businesses, the useful idiot of Vladimir Putin and the guy who insisted there are “good people” among murderous neo-Nazis that he’s still not fooling most Americans into believing he’s even slightly competent in his current post. Or that he possesses a scintilla of integrity. Better to have some vermin living in your neighborhood than to be one.
The Sun also points out that the median income in Cummings’ district is actually higher than the national average. And if he’s going to blame Cummings for the poverty in his district, he must give credit to Democrats, who now control 41 of the 50 highest income congressional districts, for conditions there, right? Of course not. Because that would require intellectual honesty and knowledge, neither of which he has ever shown an interest in.
