Trump famously promised that Mexico would pay for the wall he wants to build along the Southern border, which was ludicrous at the time and has, of course, turned out not to be true. Fox and Friends embraces Trump’s inane claim about tariffs, claiming that he could slap tariffs on Mexican products to pay for it, but doesn’t want to make them mad because they’re cooperating on stopping immigration.
“A lot of people, especially Democrats, are saying, ‘I thought you said Mexico is going to pay for the wall?’” Earhardt told Fox News viewers Thursday, ahead of airing an interview with the president.“He said, ‘I could easily slap a 5% tariff on their automobiles and other goods that are coming into the U.S.’ He said, ‘I don’t want to do that right now, because Mexico is so helpful because they’ve brought out 27,000 soldiers on the border to try and prevent people from coming into our country.”…
“So he doesn’t want to make them mad by slapping tariffs because he said they’ve been so helpful, unlike Congress.”
Jesus, when will this idiotic argument die? Tariffs are not a tax on Mexico, they are a tax on American companies that import raw materials from there to build products and on American consumers who have to pay a higher price for those products and those made completely in Mexico. Tariffs do not mean Mexico would pay for the wall, it means we would pay for the wall. Trump keeps repeating this ignorant lie and his sycophants parrot it on command. They really should call Fox and Friends the Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest show.
