So Much For Bringing the Troops Home

So Much For Bringing the Troops Home October 21, 2019

Trump has tried to sell his withdrawal from Syria and betrayal of the Kurds as fulfilling a campaign promise to “end endless wars” and bring our soldiers back home. But instead of bringing them home, he’s sending them to Iraq and sending a bunch more troops to Saudi Arabia to protect their oil facilities.

“The ceasefire is holding up very nicely. There are some minor skirmishes that have ended quickly,” Trump said in a tweet that has since been deleted and replaced by a similar message. “New areas being resettled with the Kurds. USA soldiers are not in combat or ceasefire zones. We have secured the oil. Bringing soldiers home!”…

News that the Trump administration is shifting American forces from Syria to Iraq rather than returning them to the U.S. comes just two weeks after the Pentagon ordered 1,800 troops to Saudi Arabia, a move critics said put the lie to the president’s claim that he is attempting to end perpetual wars.

That number is now 3000. And Trump says that Saudi Arabia is going to pay “100% of the cost, including the cost of our soldiers” to put those troops there. But neither the Pentagon or the State Department would confirm that or give any details on it, which strongly suggests Trump is lying, as usual. But the message here is clear: It’s not a good reason to send soldiers to keep the peace or to protect our allies, but it’s a good reason to send them to protect a brutal dictatorship and their oil, even though we import very little oil from Saudi Arabia. “Only blood for oil” might as well be his new slogan. Let the Kurds get slaughtered, but keep those oil facilities safe.
