Trump’s Utterly Bizarre Claims About Windmills

Trump’s Utterly Bizarre Claims About Windmills December 24, 2019

In a speech to Turning Point USA the other day, Trump decided to ad lib about the horrible dangers of using windmills to produce electricity. He begins by declaring that he knows more about wind energy than anyone else, then goes off on a mind-boggling rant that shows he knows less than nothing about the subject. Try to make heads or tails out of this:

We’ll have an economy based on wind. I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. I’ve studied it better than anybody. I know it’s very expensive. They’re made in China and Germany mostly — very few made here, almost none. But they’re manufactured tremendous — if you’re into this — tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything. You talk about the carbon footprint — fumes are spewing into the air. Right? Spewing. Whether it’s in China, Germany, it’s going into the air. It’s our air, their air, everything — right? So they make these things and then they put them up.

Well he does get one thing right — he never understood wind. In fact, because what he does believe about the subject is nonsensical, he actually knows less than nothing about it. The funny thing is that his own Department of Energy debunked some of this itself only a few months ago in a fact sheet about windmills. For instance, his claim that “almost none” of the windmills in use are manufactured here:

Most of the components of wind turbines installed in the United States are manufactured here. There are 500 wind-related manufacturing facilities located across 41 states, and the U.S. wind industry currently employs more than 114,000 people.

And is he seriously complaining about fumes spewing in the air from windmills? This is the guy who has tried to roll back, and sometimes eliminate entirely, regulations that limit the spewing of fumes from coal energy, vehicles and nearly every major source of such emissions. And while it’s true that the manufacturing of the wind turbines can cause carbon emissions, guess why that is? Because the manufacturing plants likely use fossil fuels for energy. And once they’re made, windmills have zero emissions forever while producing electricity.

Trump is unbelievably ignorant and hypocritical.
