Health Update: Ed Loses His Mind

Health Update: Ed Loses His Mind February 3, 2020

I am back in the hospital again, this time for another bout of Hepatic Encephalopathy. What is HE? It’ “a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease.” But the immediate cause is high ammonia levels, which can be caused by a number of different factors. We’re trying to figure out what caused this particular bout of HE.

So what happened? I woke up in the hospital, having no idea what had happened. The solution to high ammonia levels is lots of bowel movements, which are promoted with a drug called lactulose. They had put in a lactulose enema (painful, yes, but I have no memory of it). TMI, I know. Within 24 hours, I was mostly coherent, which fits the usual pattern. Now I’m pretty much totally coherent.

My friends got there and asked me if I remember falling down in the rehab facility. I was shocked. I fell down? I wasn’t injured, thankfully. They did a CT scan I don’t remember as well. But it’s so weird to think about these major events and procedures being done to me and I have no memory of. Like, what else happened? Hell, what else might I have done myself? Just weird.

So at this point, I have no idea when I’ll be getting out of here. Once we get the test results from the blood culture, we’ll know what bacteria we’re dealing with and the best choice of antibiotic to use. Then it will depend on how long a course of antibiotic I’ll need and then we can figure out a prospective timeframe for me to go back to the rehab facility.
