Trump continued his ridiculous attacks on our judiciary with a tweet demanding that Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg recuse themselves from all cases involving him or the policies of his administration. He was apparently set off by Sotomayor criticizing him in a ruling for trying to bypass the lower courts more often than previous administrations.
Then during a press conference with Indian Prime Minister Modi, he again went after Sotomayor:
Tweeting just before appearing at a welcome ceremony at the Indian president’s ceremonial residence in New Delhi, Trump cited a Laura Ingraham segment on Fox News titled, “Sotomayor accuses GOP-appointed justices of being biased in favor of Trump.” He then called on Sotomayor and Ginsburg to recuse themselves in all Trump-related matters.
“Trying to ‘shame’ some into voting her way?” Trump said of Sotomayor. “She never criticized Justice Ginsberg when she called me a ‘faker’. Both should recuse themselves on all Trump, or Trump related matters! While ‘elections have consequences’, I only ask for fairness, especially when it comes to decisions made by the United States Supreme Court!”
“Her statement was so inappropriate,” he complained. “Such a terrible statement for a Supreme Court justice!”
Yeah, how unimaginable that a judge would criticize a president for something. Conservative justices never do that, I’m sure (insert eyeroll here). This is absurd. Recusals are extremely rare for Supreme Court justices, as it should be. If a lower court judge recuses themselves, you just replace them with another judge. That can’t happen at the Supreme Court, which increases the odds of a 4-4 ruling an no substantive result. This is just Trump attacking an institution that threatens the power he thinks is unlimited for himself.
