I am Consultant and Lead Clinician in Paediatric Palliative Medicine at the Children's Hospital in Cardiff, Wales, UK and visiting Professor at the South Wales
University.
Clinically my background is in adult palliative medicine, paediatrics and paediatric oncology and I now work in paediatric palliative medicine. I am based in the Department of Child Health and see patients at home, on the ward, in outpatients, at school and at Ty Hafan children’s hospice. As a tertiary specialist, I lead a Wales-wide network comprising a wide range of professionals caring for children with malignant and non-malignant life limiting conditions.
Academically I have postgraduate degrees in pharmacology and in moral theology. I have written and/or edited several book chapters and textbooks including two editions of the Oxford Textbook and the Oxford Handbook of PPM. I have published a number of research and review articles on ethics, pharmacology and other aspects of palliative care and symptom control in children. I am Chair of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Ethics Committee and have a research interest in end of life ethics in children. In 2012 I was honoured to receive the Vittorio Ventafridda award in Palliative Medicine.
