I read an interesting article [1] from Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. Dr. Hoodbhoy is a top Pakistani Nuke Scientist and is currently the Professor of High Energy Physics, and the head of the Physics Department at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He is also a social activist and has been a critic of the Nuclear programs of India and Pakistan both. He is an intellectual and a sane voice in otherwise paranoid Pakistani analyst community, there are many who are his critics in his own country, which is expected. I find his article expressing his thoughts but also fighting against the impressions that he has to give to not invite rash criticism. In doing that, he has written a rather contradictory piece in itself. These contradictions are the bane of any sane Pakistani analyst, for the rabid ones who are prone to controversy theories have no such qualms. They are fanatics and their agenda is clear. That they keep contradicting themselves in every interview is another matter. For example, Zaid Hamid and Hamid Gul keep labeling people they want to be seen as bad at any time as zionists or Hindu agents while these may be the same people they may have lived and worked with almost half of their lives. But that is how they are. I would have expected a little more openness from Dr. Hoodbhoy though..specially given the fact that he is from the Nuclear power elite in that country and no one knows the mess that is prevalent in that country as that part of the administration does. He starts off the piece by making some assertions, which are at best half-hearted: First, the bottom line: Pakistan will not break up; there will not be another military coup; the Taliban will not seize the presidency; Pakistan's nuclear weapons will not go astray; and the Islamic sharia will not become the law of the land. Why are they half hearted? Read more

Barlow is now destitute and living in a trailer[1] So said Danielle Brian, executive director, Project on Government Oversight (POGO), in a Congressional hearing last week. Now who is this Barlow? His name is Richard Barlow. Once upon a time he was a rising star and a decorated analyst (CIA's Exceptional Accomplishment Award in 1988) in CIA. His greatest mistake? He went after Pakistan's Nuclear Program and the progress Pak had made in getting all the components from US and Europe right under the nose of the administrations.... worse WITH the connivance of Ronald Reagan's Government. The evidence against Reagan's administration was so damning that a high level official once said, that if US is ever attacked with a Nuke, you know WHO to blame it on!! Danielle Brian also continued about Barlow that:[1] As a CIA intelligence officer and later in the Pentagon, Rich Barlow learned that top US officials were allowing Pakistan to manufacture and possess nuclear weapons. Barlow also discovered that US officials were hiding these activities from Congress. Barlow objected and suggested to his supervisors that Congress should be made aware of the situation... he was fired. These allegations and statements EXACTLY mirror the assertions made by two British journalists, Adrian Levy and Catherin Scott-Clark in their Investigative book "Deception". Read more

Iranian President, Ahmadinejad, has won the elections and said to have won 62.63% votes! This seems to be a fixed elections for sure. I remember watching Christian Amanpour on CNN when she was reporting a day back that from all the people in the polling stations that she had been talking to - Mir Hossein Mousavi, the contender seemed far ahead. Ahmadinejad had the support of the rural people while the younger population was with Mousavi. Wonder what is next in that region? It is rare that youth goes up in passion for something and be settled for something less than radical change. Read more

I still remember at the end of our 12th standard year we were gathered around and discussing what we wanted to become later in life. One wanted to be a doctor, another an engineer etc.. there was one girl amongst us also, who had a strange career option: "Marry a Millionaire"! Well, I guess if you take out your uptight morality out of it, it was a pretty smart answer. Now this is what this lady actually teaches women to do... How to snag a millionaire husband in these times of recession! Read more

Aphrodisiacs have been an obsession with men all through the ages. With the advent of Viagara, a new chapter was written. Now, there has been a study in UK to find the best natural Viagara out there. So a team led by Croatian nutritionist Dr Lejla Kazinic Kreho did studies to discover that Cabbage probably best fits the bill! They pointed out that Sauerkraut - which is a shredded form of cabbage fermented by various lactic acid bacteria does it the best. Wikipedia says "It has a long shelf-life and a distinctive sour flavor, both of which result from the lactic acid that forms when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage." Apparently this is not the only use of Sauerkraut - earlier during the 18th century, when scurvy was prevalent amongst seamen, it had come to their rescue as well: In his 1772 Treatise on Scurvy, James Lind discussed the ability of German seamen to withstand long sea voyages without succumbing to scurvy compared to seamen from other countries, and pointed to their consumption of fermented cabbage as a defining difference. In 1776, Captain James Cook was awarded the Copley Medal for demonstrating that sauerkraut could be used to allay scurvy in British crews on long sea voyages. Read more

Today I downloaded a book from Project Gutenberg - a source of free books whose copyrights have expired. This book is titled "Akbar, Emperor of India" written by Richard von Garbe (Rector of the University of Tubingen) reprinted in April, 1909.[1] The author talks of how Akbar was one of the finest ruler that India and indeed the world has known. Probably his greatest strength was in defying the odds of his upbringing and still becoming a gentle, wise, and caring person. He also set aside rules and laws that in Islam came directly from Mohammad - like Jizya (called Poll tax here in the book). His spiritual development was indeed remarkable given the raw material that he got. Remember, he was the successor of Timur and Babar - both barbarians (according to the book, Timur slaughtered 100,000 prisoners he captured on way to Delhi in ONE DAY!) - and son of Humayun - an opium drugged idiot who lived most of his life in exile. It was the influence of Akbar's tutor Mir Abdul Latif that really made him what he was. But interestingly there was another factor to Akbar's personality that led him to break free of the Islamic rules that his predecessors had followed the world over through the history. Akbar was BOTH, Sunni and Shia! His father was Sunni, while his mother was Shia. And.. he was born at the home of a Hindu. He had suffered discrimination himself.[2] In Persia he was persecuted because he was a Sunni, while in India he was mistrusted for being Shi'a. Throughout Akbar's life one finds examples of his religious questing and tolerance. Read more

Let us look at two songs - both very popular - from Indian movies: (1) Ek, do teen.... char paan, che, saat, aath, nau, das gyarah... from Ram Lakhan (lyricist: Sameer) (2) Humne dekhi hai in aankhon ki mehakti khushboo.. from Khamoshi (lyricist: Gulzar) Popularity besides, which song do you think is more profound? But more important than that is to know.... why? Why does one song - or creation - sound more profound than the other? Have you ever thought of it? Listen to these two songs and see which song leaves you with a string of thoughts and takes you down a lane of further and amazing thoughts and insights. In fact, if you dwell on the second song for just 10 minutes, you probably are more likely to take the road that the poet, Gulzar, himself may have taken to REACH those lines. While the first song, is just that.. the first thought that came in a poet's mind.. the first unsophisticated words without much thought. So, what is said is important, but what the poet REJECTED enroute to those words is CRITICAL. The more "lower level" thoughts that one traverses, the more sophisticated and profound the thinking is likely to be. Also, by the same principle, it also stands to reason that once you read or think of things that are profound, the chances are that the writer would have made enough progress on the thinking (road) leading up to that. Read more
