Gandhi was a schizophrenic at best and a crazy guy at worst. He was shrewd and knew how to get his work done and get his way without ever taking any responsibility for any decision. I want to bring here some quotes from books, people and Gandhi himself which make it clear as to what I just said. Jews, Hitler and Palestine "But the German persecution of the Jews seems to have no parallel in history. The tyrants of old never went so mad as Hitler seems to have gone. And he is doing it with religious zeal. For he is propounding a new religion of exclusive and militant nationalism in the name of which many inhumanity becomes an act of humanity to be rewarded here and hereafter. The crime of an obviously mad but intrepid youth is being visited upon his whole race with unbelievable ferocity. If there ever could be a justifiable war in the name of and for humanity, a war against Germany, to prevent the wanton persecution of a whole race, would be completely justified. But I do not believe in any war. A discussion of the pros and cons of such a war is therefore outside my horizon or province. " Article that Appeared in Harijan on November 26, 1938 (Source: Gandhi on Jews) Then he writes a letter to Hitler in 1941 to say:[1] "Nor do I believe that you are the monster described by your opponents." But what surprises one is the prescription his gives then to the Jews later on. I mentioned the subject to Gandhi in 1946 when Hitler was dead. "Hitler," Gandhi said, "killed five million Jews. It is the greatest crime of our time. But the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs… It would have aroused the world and the people of Germany… As it is they succumbed anyway in their millions." Read more

Several letters have been received by me asking me to declare my views about the Arab-Jew question in Palestine and the persecution of the Jews in Germany. It is not without hesitation that I venture to offer my views on this very difficult question. Read more

(This is an excerpt from Louis Fischer's book) The Nazi press assaulted Gandhi savagely for these words. It threatened reprisals against India. “I should rank myself a coward,” he replied, “if for fear of my country or myself or Indo-German relations being harmed, I hesitated to give what I felt in the innermost recesses of my heart to be one hundred percent sound advice.” Read more

We have reported time and again, with the ONLY report links available in the media, on this revelation - i.e; that Lt Gen Mahmood had directed Sayeed Sheikh to wire $100,000 to Mohd. Atta.[Report #1]. The tremendous effort that went in to obfuscate the truth by the Republican Government led by Dick Cheney (come on.. Bush was just a toy!) - is indeed amazing! What the FBI agent Glass reveals here in this piece about the intention of the ISI Agent RG Abbas who says in an undercover wiretap that his purchases were financed by Bin Laden are indeed SHOCKING! Specially when you listen to Glass narrating what Abbas told him when they came out of the NY restaurant pointing towards the World Trade Towers. Truly shocking EVEN for me.. who has very closely followed this story ever since it first appeared in TOI and then on WSJ! Read more

This is a story of a lady whose first boy friend died. And then very reluctantly, she fell in love again. Before going to this Tony Robbins seminar in 2001, she told her fiance that they couldn't go further. On the morning of 9-11, while she was sleeping, her fiance, who worked on the 101st floor of World Trade Center, left her a message telling her how much he loved her. Her take away: Live in the moment. Read more

We in India just pretend to be secular or communal. Indeed that is true of the rest of the world as well. Every one has an ideology and sticking and pushing one's ideology is always considered "Secular" and the other pushing his/her ideology is considered "Communal". That's about it. However, in this election, as in many, the parties have made a big deal about the BJP and that it is "Communal". That others have done worse treatment of others doesn't matter. I was reading the thoughts of Cho Ramaswamy [1] - one heck of a thinker - and he has a nice way to put the "Politics of Secularism and Communalism" in the context of Poll Numbers. If the BJP gets around 170 seats, they will be secular. If they get less than 150, they will be communal as far as the other parties are concerned. 150 will be a communal number and 150 and above will be a secular number! I agree with that assessment. I also agree with him that the chances of BJP being a "Secular" party by his definition is also a big possibility now. The confusion over Mamta Bannerjee, AIADMK, RJD etc will surely affect Congress and help BJP. In the end, Naidu may not be in the Third Front anymore. I too feel that it will be a hung parliament and very unstable. But as the elections went ahead the chances of BJP have become better. One of the things that people have not missed is the Congress consistently asking Left to join in post-poll alliance. Now, after the drama of the Indo-US Nuke deal and the way the country was held at ransom by the Leftists.. when they pushed COngress and UPA into the ditch (and the country as well), the Congress is going back to join with Communists.. to .... "keep BJP out"!?? You know, if an opportunist like Ram Bilas Paswan or Mayawati use such a phrase I can understand.. but Dr. Manmohan Singh? This is height of opportunism. Well, even the Communists after all that drama are making noises to cozy up to the Congress![2] Read more

Today we went to a new Gurudwara in Houston. It is very well made and very nice. The shabad and path was very nicely done... by, who I initially thought was a career Pathi. But it turned out that he was a realtor in his day job and on weekend he would do the path in Gurudwara. Here are a couple of pictures from inside the Gurudwara. Read more

Recently, I have written a lot of the threat from Talibanization of Pakistan. In most of the posts, I have stressed that it is the mindset which is the biggest issue. I do not believe killing people will necessarily achieve anything much. That is one reason I have argued, whenever on that topic, that war is not an option. I was very encouraged by the thinking and ultimately an admission from the Obama administration about the ground realities of terrorism in Pakistan. That, was a very important first step. The mess that mindless giving of Aid to Pakistan - which most certainly lands in the hands of the Generals as opposed to the common man - has made matters worse in Pakistan. Of course, no one expects someone like US to give Aid and also keep on the lookout for social complexities and the Pakistan common man at that. The truth is that Pakistani Army and ISI have hurt the common man, because they have made Pakistan live on two revenue streams - Aid and Nuclear proliferation. NOTHING MORE. The Exports are of basic agriculture or raw materials. Technology, which could have been a major source of revenue after the 1990s just as it was in India, was an opportunity lost. The need, therefore, at this time was of two things: engage and challenge the mindsets; and second, open up new and viable revenue streams which go DIRECTLY to common man and CANNOT be directed to feed the terrorism monster that Aid and Nuke Proliferation have obviously done. Read more
