Dear friends at DRISHITIKONE In order to be able to help people in very effective ways, I have used the moon phases, plus the day of the week when people were born. From the new moon to the full moon is when all our chakras begin their strong activity. In other words, is a spiritual moon, so from the full moon to the new moon is purely material. Being material doesn’t mean it’s a bad moon, it means we can improve our physical well being easily, in martial arts is when you train very, very hard to get stamina, reliable reflexes, and endurance. If you enjoy dancing it’s the best moment to improve your dancing. Read more

Obama has asked Bruce Riedel to conduct an inter-agency review of American policy towards Pakistan and Afghanistan. Who is Bruce Riedel? Well, he has a very interesting background and his history gives some insight into the direction in to where Obama may be headed as regards his policy to South Asia and specifically the Terrorism that we all have come to experience - specially in context of the Mumbai Attacks. Look at what he says in an interview with Spiegel about Pakistan and that area - India-Pakistan and South Asia - in the aftermath of Mumbai Attacks on 26/11: I have said on many occasions that Pakistan is the most dangerous country in the world: International terrorism, nuclear proliferation, the threat of nuclear war, drugs, democracy deficit and Islam all come together in an extraordinarily combustible way. India and Pakistan have already fought three wars and just five years ago were on the brink of a fourth. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. Nevertheless, South Asia is the most likely place where in our lifetimes we might see a nuclear war. Riedel had last worked on this region during the Bill Clinton presidency when he actually designed the reaction and response of US towards the Kargil conflict. He had called the bluff of Pakistan and specifically Musharraf, which he details in his path-breaking article - "American Diplomacy and the 1999 Kargil Summit" (attached with this post). Read more

Meloncholia or sorrow and the pain as well as self destruction that it wroughts is often very tightly linked to Art. Artists of all hues and all ages and all cultures have destroyed. In fact, in a Harvard study Conducted by Modupe Akinola and Wendy Berry Mendes (Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, December 1, 2008), this link between depression/sorrow and art/creativity was firmly established. In this study various types of subjects including those who have high vulnerability to depression (participants’ high baseline levels of an adrenal steroid, which has been previously linked to depression) were asked to create works of art. Some of the participants were asked to do the work after they had experienced rejection prior to the doing the art. When the professional artists evaluated the works, the art pieces of those who had suffered rejection and depression before the work, were consistently rated higher. The group that had a special vulnerability to depression was consistently ranked the highest. Read more

This again, is a lovely poem which shows the hurt and pain of the poet when the things and people he loved the most and invested in the most, turned back to either criticize him or pull him down! Love and its accompanying hurt can be with and from any source. Love is very synonymous with passion in the normal sense... so I wanted to include it in this Valentine Day specisal weekly poem collection. Read more

DAILY COMMUNICATION WITH OUR MASTER WITHIN All the time spent in looking for a true and reliable communication with our inner self, is always well worth. If we are able to find time for some things that are not worthy, then why shouldn’t we make the daily habit of archiving something really useful? It would be an excellent idea to try on our solar day. Other two good days are the always changing days on which the moon is in the moon sign that we were born in. Lunarium is the best place to find out about these two wonderful days. Both on our solar day and when the moon is on our moon sign are very appropriate to start this so needed communication with our true selves. Read more

Some months back, I had written a blog post "Was Krishna's Gita a Rebellion of his times?", where I had failed to make one major connection - that between the Vedas and Upanishads came Gita. And in my view, the difference in direction of the philosophy from Vedic to Vedantic happened largely as a result of Krishna's basic take on Vedas and his own "new" Gyan (knowledge). It has often been claimed that Sri Krishna was indeed one of the greatest Vedic scholars and his take or interpretation and then notes on the Vedas is important - indeed critical - to the evolution of the entire Hindu tradition. I now, after reading and re-reading the Bhagwad Gita have become more and more convinced that Vedas - at least as they were verbatim - were not viewed by Sri Krishna in the highest of esteem. How and why is that so, let us discuss with specific verses and their interpretations: Read more

I just got an email forward from a close friend, Richa, who sent this video of a truly inspirational person - Nick Vujicic. Nick was born without hands or legs (no limbs), and yet is an inspiration to many. Here is his story (taken from Wikipedia) and the video: The first-born child in his devout Serbian Christian family, Nick Vujicic was born in Melbourne, Australia with the rare Tetra-amelia disorder: limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, and having one small foot with two toes protruding from his left thigh. Initially, his parents were devastated. Vujicic was otherwise healthy. Growing up His life was filled with difficulties and hardships. One was not being able to attend a mainstream school because of his physical disability, as the law of Australia required, even though he was not mentally impaired. During his schooling, the laws were changed, and Nick was one of the first disabled students to be migrated to a mainstream school. He learned to write using the two toes on his left "foot," and a special device that slid onto his big toe to grip. He also learned to use a computer and type using the "heel and toe" method (as demonstrated in his speeches). He can also throw tennis balls and answer the phone (also demonstrated in speeches). Epiphany Being bullied at his school, Nick grew extremely depressed, and by the age of eight, started contemplating suicide. After begging God to grow arms and legs, Nick eventually began to realize that his accomplishments were inspirational to many, and began to thank God he was alive. A key turning point was a newspaper article about a man dealing with severe disability that his mother showed him when he was 12, that led him to realize he wasn't the only one with major struggles. When he was seventeen, he started to give talks at his prayer group, and eventually started his non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs. Read more

Google has come out with a new gmail functionality called Multiple Inboxes. Basically they have made available messages under different labels or types of messages (starred, drafts etc) to be seen on the main screen of your email. This way you needn't go back and forth to different labels - specially the significant ones - and then back to your main inbox. You can view it all in a "dashboard" like fashion. You can check the settings in the attached image.. to see the options. To turn this on, go to the "Labs" in the settings and then check for Multiple Inboxes option now available. Read more

This has to do with the COBRA provision - the medical insurance available to the employees who have been laid off. The provision make companies responsible for extending health insurance to former employees age 55 and older or who worked for the company for at least 10 years and this extension of benefits would be permanent! The other provisions are: Read more

Over the last few months ever since the 26/11, Pakistan has mired the thing - as I had expected - in bureacratic nonsense. From "closing down offices" of the LeT but not arresting the top guys, to now filing charges against some within the Pakistani laws but not having laws that would prevent those cases from going anywhere (prosecution for criminal acts outside of Pakistan is not possible). [1] So soon, the world's proverbial 5 minutes obsession with Mumbai Attacks will have ended, and then it will be useless to bring it up as a major crisis to be dealt with. Sometimes, you need provocative mechanisms to instill Top-of-the-mind-recall! In marketing that's what sales and advertising and promotions do. In any case, I had been looking at the news of Pakistani reply fleetingly but it seems clear - when 10 different people are talking 10 different languages with the same administration to different audiences.. that you know that nothing will really come out of all this. It was a sham to begin with and it will remain just that. People who are honest would know who did this and if they are really honest they would also admit that there are enough groups within ISI and Pak Army who are leading this charge. Read more
