I have been reconfiguring my laptop - really adding software that I can use to better organize my life. One of my main challenges is to keep my self organized. So I decided to find ways that are simple and yet powerful and accessible for organizing. When I am saying organizing, I mean the following things: - Daily to-do's/action list - RSS feeds - Blogging - Emails. So what are the tools that I feel are the best for this. Two tools that I really like a lot are Firefox browser and Spicebird. Read more

Which steps would you take in case suddenly you find yourself with something very valuable to transmit? In my long quest for self-improvement out of the blue a very practical program saw light in my mind. A project that would seek the practical application of our knowledge. Somebody said that the practical application of our knowledge is called WISDOM. Read more

In feb 2005, Simplified Exit Scheme (SES) was started by the Government to enable the corporate houses to end the existence of defunct companies that are not only been running but also public with stocks listed on the stock exchange.[1] The companies that had carried out no activity since their incorporation and wanted to exit could do so with a mere declaration by the applicant instead of a magesterial affidavit. Shell companies are a major tool in the hands of industrialists and corporate bosses who use it to embezzle funds and also earn money through various ways. What ways you would ask? Read more

There has been a hue and cry in Pakistan over surrendering the terrorists of JeM and LeT to India, saying that Pakistan does not have an Extradition Treaty with India. This morning there was this news item in a lot of Indian newspapers which underscores that there is indeed a law in Pakistan - the Extradition Act 1972, which allows Pakistan to hand over fugitives who have committed homicides and other crimes back to that foreign state, where such act was committed, even if there is no extradition treaty with that country.[1] Read more

Think tanks - or policy institutes - have had an interesting history. Although the first think tank may have started sometimes in 1831 when Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), was founded in 1831 at the initiative of the Duke of Wellington; even until 1970s only a few dozen think tanks were there around the world. And most were non-partisan. Things have changed over the years. Think tanks typically now further the political agendas of their political or organization donors while looking all serious and independent. In fact, a think tank these days goes hand in hand with a PR exercise. If the big oil companies want to give a message, they have a think tank doing that for them instead. Or if the tobacco lobby wants to tailor their message they have the think tanks do that. There are Republican and Democratic think tanks in the US, there are Communist, Secular, Religious think tanks in India. Read more

Last two weeks have been terrible for jobs around the world! As the Satyam fiasco started, by last Friday (Jan 10) 20,000 resumes had been posted on the net, according to one source. In fact other Indian companies are making a bee-line for the resources of Satyam - specially who owned accounts or large projects and they are in the process of usurping projects. According to another website, last week, 40,000 people were laid off from various companies. Read more

This has to be a record of some sort! Zimbabwe had just last week introduced three BILLION Zim-dollar notes (10, 20 and 50), with the aim that the public could have access to their money in the banks. Well this week, due to unprecedented hyper-inflation, they have introduced a TRILLION Zim-dollar set (10, 20, 50 and a whopping 100). A 100 Trillion dollar? [1] This 100 trillion dollar would be worth USD 300. In 1980, when Robert Mugabe took over, the Zim-dollar was the same as British Pound. So much has gone wrong there! Read more

Long back when I was in India, I had had this idea that so many houses/apartments in India are kept locked, because people do not want to give them on rent. It could be a good business model if a company could do a contract with such home owners and create a network in certain areas of a city and utilize them as secondary hotelling options. Today, I think, with so many professionals travelling, it could be a viable business for local business travellers. If one could add in the broadband and other facilities (printing/PCs etc) then it is an excellent business. Well, Mahindra & Mahindra, a business house that has in recent years earned my respect a lot (Mahindra has slowly become a remarkable player in US tractor market - specifically in the red neck country, check Mahindra Tractors site) has embarked on a similar venture called Mahindra Homestays. Read more
