I was reading the eye witness account of Field Marshall Sam Maneckshaw of the 1947-48 war with Pakistan (and their surrogates, the tribesmen). Field Marshall Maneckshaw had accompanied VK Menon to get the military assessment on the ground. He writes about how he saw the Maharaja jumping around all over the place and signing the Accession and what role the different players of Indian establishment played in that war. Nehru's indecisive nonsensical nature comes out very clearly. And, for that I will leave it up to Field Marshall Maneckshaw to describe the Cabinet meeting where the decision to fight back the Pakistani forces was "taken" (yes, "taken" is the operative word here). At the morning meeting he handed over the (Accession) thing. Mountbatten turned around and said, "Come on Manekji (He called me Manekji instead of Manekshaw), what is the military situation?" I gave him the military situation, and told him that unless we flew in troops immediately, we would have lost Srinagar, because going by road would take days, and once the tribesmen got to the airport and Srinagar, we couldn't fly troops in. Here is some stock and economic news analysis I received in mail today: + Indian Stock Market arena is flooded with self-certified analysts who draw up conclusions faster than a news can break. The number of such analysts has drastically reduced compared to Jan’08, thanks to the bear hug, rather thanks to the bear honeymoon, but still there are quite a many. As soon as the news of Govt. releasing 15000 Crs to banks came in there were messages with buy calls as they expected the market to take positive cues from the news. They basically failed to understand that Govt. is giving banks their own money! + It is heartening to note that CITI has escaped dieing a dog’s death, else the CITI would have not let any one sleep! The positive news of $310 Bn (approx) bail out package has moved the Dow above few resistances and hope the move continues. Though the news is great it may bring in some bad news for Indian employees as the company now would definitely lay off employees and cut salaries as a rescue plan. The market has most probably factored the probable events, but still panic reactions cannot be ruled out. We need not worry if these events take place in slow and steady manner. Read more

Irrespective of the merits or otherwise of the case of Manu Sharma - this exchange between Ram Jethmalani and this female from IBN-CNN brings out VERY VERY clearly what is soooo wrong with the press of India!! It is such people who instead of asking questions that will provide more information to the public in a dispassionate manner go about in a sensationalist manner and indict and pronounce judgments based on their own little brains. I was always against Manu Sharma in this case, but the very basic rule has been that he was to be considered innocent until found guilty in the court of law... which obviously this female has never read about.
