The split in today's world is perceptible even to a hasty glance. Any of our contemporaries readily identifies two world powers, each of them already capable of entirely destroying the other. However, understanding of the split often is limited to this political conception, to the illusion that danger may be abolished through successful diplomatic negotiations or by achieving a balance of armed forces. Read more

British society - despite the many allegations on it - one of those few societies in the West that has let other communities air their propaganda. At times such propaganda has been racist, hate filled and down-right inciteful! Specially the speeches of some of the Islamic clerics. I have heard some and one guy was even interviewed on the BBC. His remarks were absolutely atrocious. It was a remarkable example of restraint on part of the anchor to even talk to him! Therefore, I was surprised to see this report that the House of Lords in England on Friday described the Islamic legal code Sharia as "wholly incompatible" with human rights legislation. These remarks/comments were aired during a a debate in Britain over the appropriateness of incorporating Sharia courts into the UK's legal system, a move advocated by figures including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and Lords Phillips, the new senior law lord. Read more

In this crisis these days when newer records are being set on the stock exchanges for the drops, here is another sobering thought. We have all talked about the Mortgage crisis from the debt to the consumers. But nobody seems to have started discussing the Credit Card debt. Apparently, it may not be that big but it is fairly significant! At least for the mortgage debt the lender can repossess the home, for Credit card - what do you take away? The figures below give the information on the different types of debts in the US. Consumer and Individual Debt Purchases and cash advances on major credit cards in just the last year by consumers in the US = $2.2 trillion Growth in overall credit card debt between 1989 and 2006 = 315%. Mortgage Debt - $14 trillion in 2008 Other facts: Read more

When you see the news on Indian media (TV) today, it seems so rank bad. When a Zee news reader reads out the news - you dont know whether she is speaking in English or Hindi? It is Hinglish.. and the kids these days, as a result, cannot learn either of the languages properly! Their diction was perfect and the pronunciation was corrected with a zeal. There was rarely a time that they would make a mistake on words. They spoke with a poker face whether it was 1984 massacres or a terrorist attack. Their very demeanour provided trust. Today's newscasters somehow give me a feeling of lot of hollowness! Even though the Doordarshan news used to be sanitized, YET, the people who used to render it for us were very talented and had great backgrounds. Look at one here: Ramu Damodaran Read more

Whether change is brought about consciously or unconsciously it is still the same. Conscious change implies effort; and unconscious endeavor to bring about a change also implies an effort, a struggle. So long as there is a struggle, conflict, the change is merely enforced, and there is no understanding; and therefore it is no longer a change at all. So, is the mind capable of meeting the problem of change - of acquisitiveness, for example - without making an effort, just seeing the whole implication of acquisitiveness? Read more
