Just read this line on Amitabh Bachchan's blog that his father told him once: ‘Man ka ho to acchha. Man ka na ho to zyada acchha !’ If things happen according to what you wish. It is good. If things do not happen according to what you wish. Then it is even better. I think its one of the very profound things I have read in some time. In moments of pain, it probably helps to be next to a philosopher and a poet (that too as great as Shri Harivanshrai Bachchan). I was pretty amazed at AB's blogging capabilities. I personally think he writes very well and is at the top of game just as he is in his chosen profession. That sensitivity which comes with art clearly shines through. Read more

Earth is the new member of "Axis of Evil"! It has acquired some rather strong Nuclear reactors that none of us were aware of! And its been firing those off with complete non-chalance adding to the heat at the crust and sending isotopes our way. This is terrible! What's more sometimes these nuclear reactions could occur unbeknownst on the surface as well. The Crustal rocks at Oklo in Gabon, Africa had a spontaneous ignition of Uranium fission some 1.7 billion years ago! Now, what was Ahmednijad doing in Gabon so many years back? And the funny thing is that one of facilitators of such Nuclear fission through natural ease could be that ubiquitous thing called "Gravity". Read more

Since Muslims behave or tend to associate with each other (and expand) with a Pan-religious mindset, it probably makes sense to have a global poll that could understand the thoughts and aspirations of many amongst them. Most of the Muslims point to the several "hurts and insults" to their religious brethren that sometimes makes some members act in an extremist mould. A Gallup Poll of the Muslim World surveyed a representative sample of 90 percent of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims, the most comprehensive study ever done. The findings are explored in the new book "Who Speaks for Islam?" by John Esposito, Islamic studies professor at Georgetown University; and Dalia Mogahed, executive director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies in Washington. This was an ambitious six-year project that involved hour-long, face-to-face interviews with residents in nearly 40 nations, Gallup has looked the perspectives of Muslim men and women – urban and rural, educated and illiterate, young and old. Below are some interesting findings listed under major categories. On Islam & Democracy • Large majorities cite the equal importance of democracy and Islam to the quality of life and progress of the Muslim world. They see no contradiction between democratic values and religious principles. • Political freedoms are among the things they admire most about the West. • Substantial majorities in nearly all nations say that if drafting a new constitution, they would guarantee freedom of speech. • Most want neither theocracy nor secular democracy but a third model in which religious principles and democratic values coexist. They want their own democratic model that draws on Islamic law as a source. • Significant majorities say religious leaders should play no direct role in drafting a constitution, writing legislation, determining foreign policy, or deciding how women dress in public. Read more

Bush administration has used Musharraf as a short hand for Pakistan. He personifies Pakistan to these guys. Its another matter that nobody (or very few) in Pakistan think so! 🙂 Musharraf has been an enigma. He was at his best when he was combative. Specially against India. He is brash and outlandish in his goals.. but that is his strength. His Kargil intrusion plan was one such thing. He believed in a strategy and thought he could pull it off and somehow he thought the Indian Government and forces will be easy pushovers. There was a reason why India won the last two wars and despite the Nukes and large amount of ammunition coming to Pakistan in the last two decades, I find it still outlandish for any Pak General to think he could pull such a thing off. But he almost did - given his persistence! The same attitude was shown in Agra. He managed to get a covert televization of his conference with the journalists when it was made clear to those journalists that it was a closed door thing. When the Indian side came to know of the live telecast that it swung into action and stopped the thing. IT was right after that point onwards that the Vajpayee-Musharraf talks broke down irretrievably. Sushma Swaraj came out and made the statements that simply closed any path forward. It was a simple but telling step to Musharraf's stupid action. Read more

A short story by Suresh Naig ******** ********* After the serial bomb blasts and carnage, in a walled city, one person was heard conversing on a satellite phone, oblivious of the surrounding in a casual manner. His conversation without any fear or inhibition, proved his careless attitude. He was calling, presumably his patron, whose geographical location was, privy to only a select few. Though many of them did not know his geographical location, he was accessible to core members. The conversation went on like this. ‘We did it. The whole media is discussing it in their usual style, accusing and defending each other as it suits them. It’s amusing. Some of them are shouting for modification of strategy to deal with us and the others accusing back. It’s because of “MODIfication”, these things are recurrent. Now that we have successfully executed it, we need funds for our cause.’ ‘How much?’ The person on the other person queried. When the caller pronounced his bidding, the respondent safely ensconced in the God-only-knows confines was shocked. He gave a long lecture to the novice. ‘It’s preposterous. We fund such huge sum as demanded by you only for a comprehensive covert operation, against odds. In a comprehensive covert operation, various processes of recruitment, networking, logistics, media propaganda and execution have to be performed in a hostile territory against so many odds.’ Read more

China has no friends. And there is nothing that they align themselves with. They can hit anyone they feel will help them. Pakistan is also one of those states that they are using. IN fact that is how the global state diplomacy works. China has gotten a lot a lot of weapons and nuclear help from USSR and Russia over the years. In fact Michael Levin, in a recent book "The Next Great Clash" he surmises that China will align with Russia against the US. A recent set of satellite pictures however show that China has 58 launch pads for nuclear capable missiles spread over a 2,000 sq km deployment area near Delingha and Da Qaidam in the northern parts of Qinghai province (see the map . DaQaidam . Delingha . the pads). These missiles are aimed at Russia and India. Primarily the target is India. Here are some more details. The 58 launch pads include four basic designs: a 70-meter full circle; a 40-meter T-shape, a 15-45 meter rectangular, and a 30-meter pull-out (see Figure 3). The 15-meter rectangular is by far the most common design. There are two full circle pads and four T-shape pads. The large circular pads are probably older designs for the liquid-fuel DF-3 and DF-4, which require a large number of fuel trucks on the pad until shortly before launch. The liquid-fuel missiles are now being phased out and replaced with the solid-fuel DF-21 and DF-31, which require fewer support vehicles. The DF-31 has not been reported in the Delingha and Da Qaidam areas, but its smaller predecessor the DF-21 has deployed there for several years and can be launched from the small 15-meter pads. Two of the pads in Figure 3 show what are estimated to be DF-21 launchers, a 2006 deployment previously described here. Read more

This is the speech that Swami Vivekananda gave on September 11, 1893 - 108 years before another storm.. malafide albeit... hit the US. This speech is the cornerstone of Swami Vivekananda's teachings and explorations. I think it is a great speech - although it does not fully capture his genius! He was one of the greatest giants of his age. ****** ******** ******** "Sisters and Brothers of America. [At this moment came the three minute standing ovation from the audience of 7,000] It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. "My thanks also to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. "I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. "I will quote to you brethren a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest childhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: 'As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.' Read more

Vatican newspaper says that Islam is the largest religion in the world. 17.4 % of the world population is Catholic while Muslims are 19.2%. So there is some kind of despair. "It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said. It is like two armies fighting each other where each thinks that just by increasing the numbers they can prove their "God" is better than the others'! Its a tribal mentality that runs through the heart of these people - both Muslims and Catholics and the evangelists. But when people do not want to think and take responsibility but need a pastor or a Prophet to care for their sins and happiness, then how can you expect any understanding of God/Truth itself? Read more

This is funny! This guy says that according to Google's own Quality Rating Guidelines for what a SPAM is - Google's site is itself a Spam! Guidelines: When trying to decide if a page is Spam, it is helpful to ask yourself this question: If I remove the scraped (copied) content, the ads, and the links to other pages, is there anything of value left? If the answer is no, page is probably Spam. Assertion: If You will remove copied content (search results), the ads and the links to other pages, is there anything of value left? NO. Read more
