Cynicism about the Pakistani elections is so high internally and externally that no one believes this to be the end of strife. From splitting of the nation to civil war to bombings - everything has been predicted by the high and mighty as well as the commoners. Here is a comment on rediff, that was forwarded by my friend, Mahesh, which I found really interesting and hillarious in its construction. Unfortunately the instability is in no one's good. The sooner that place is stable the better it is for the world! beginning of the End by Allah on Feb 19, 2008 07:20 PM 1. Mushy looses support 2. Gets kicked by ISI too for not backing Mullahs 3. Like I said earlier in the post, Religion colors everyone's logic and rationale. Whatever one could see through easily, is lost to him when the extra layer of religion comes through. I had discussed in this post (Two Millenia of India's Economic Journey) that the first casualty when a society goes down is the scientific temper. And there is a reason why I have not called it "Science". In my view, Science like Religion is an ideology. It has its own fundamentalists. People who will go to any length to obfuscate the truth. There have been some brilliant and smart minds in early 20th century who could think out of the box. Today's materialist scientists can't think out of the box. They take a line. Jump into a box and join a camp. When you join a side/box/camp, you are no longer independent. Whether its a camp of religion or of scientists. If it is an ideological camp then you are bonded. You cannot agree with some points and disagree with 4 others. You are expected to agree with all! So ends your freedom. Religion works similarly. There are enough scientists who happen to believe that Bible is their latest physics primer and would not deviate. Funny thing is Truth is with neither. Such is the effect of religion in the US, that people are averse to science as a matter of ideology. It does not matter whether they agree with it or not. Whatever the scientists say, they disagree. Read more

Artists can paint anywhere! Anything can serve as their canvas and their subject. Female body has been the most loved subject. What happens when the female body itself becomes the canvas? Here is an example of Japanese female body art. The other pictures (not safe for viewing at work). The intracacy of the Japanese painting is breath-taking.. Read more

Extremism has a one point agenda - terror and assertion. It looks for accomplices. Two are the best known so far - religion and poverty. Both the concepts promise Utopia - the ultimate happiness and good. Hope and incredible one at that. In fact there is really nothing credible about both! In that attempt a person goes blind and loses all perspective. There are some top 30 Muslim clerics in Pakistan. Suicide Attacks and Extremists were discussed with them. Their country is burning with that fire. They are more concerned on how this fire was not effectively pointed at US and India. The madness of these clerics in Pakistan reminds me of this couplet always: Dil jala hai to zaalim zara ghar bhi to jalaa kar dekh; Duniya ko kuchh pata to chale ke kahin aag lagi hai! Read more

Zaban-E-Yaar Man Turki from the movie "Ek Musafir Ek Hasina" sung by Asha Bhosle, Mohd Rafi (Music by OP Nayyar & lyrics by Shewan Rizvi) This is not a usual song. It has some Farsi (Persian) woven in, which makes the song very interesting. I had seen this movie as a kid.. and loved the music. This is quintessential OP Nayyar. The ethereal feel of this song made me listen to it so many times. I was holed up in a small village during my Masters and I had no other source of entertainment. Songs from this movie were the most heard songs on my small cassette player. Read more

Falling in love has become technical. It is no longer about feelings. It is about the effectiveness and efficiency of the investment one makes in a relationship - both of time and money. So, if the feelings dont match then it the match is called off! There are web sites that use complicated formulas and scientific algorithms to match people. If that was enough it would be fine. The linear way of looking at love is carried forward into one's life with new kind of phones which can second guess how a person thinks. And if s/he is passionate in her/his love or not by analyzing the voice. If love was about a few formulas and analyzing voice patterns then scientists would have made the best lovers. Read more

I am not a great fan of Australians and their cricketing spirit. I think if there has been a team of talented but thoroughly un-gentlemanly players with zero sportsman spirit in Cricket - it has to be Australia. From that infamous ball by Trevor Chappell to the messing up with Murlitharan (when they couldn't handle his spin with their bats and used their extra players - read UMPIRES - to play for them) to the shameful exhibition of low level of integrity in the recent Test series, Australians just do what it takes to win. They don't care for the game or if they deserve to win or not. They will twist every rule - written and unwritten - to win the game. This is so different from the West Indian team in the 1970's and 80's - which would beat the teams using their sheer talent. Gary Sobers would have been demeaned to play under the "leadership" of Greg Chappell who encouraged his younger brother to bowl underarm and rejoiced about that! There was a time and place for Don Bradman in Australia and its long over. The world has changed now. In the last decade or so the fulcrum has bent Eastwards and Indian cricket seems to have become the big daddy of anything cricket. Now, you can see the Australians get angry and frustrated. What they could do to these brown guys.. they cannot anymore. In fact now they are in that position where they have to face the bullying. Something they have never been used to. Its good for their health one can say. Read more
