"Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." Hamari sanson mein aaj tak from Pakistani Movie "Mere Huzoor" sung by Mehdi Hasan (music by M Ashraf and lyrics by Unknown) This song was sent by Sukriti. I think its extremely nice - good music, and great lyrics... and fantastic voice of Mehdi Hasan. It has been sung by both Mehdi Hasan and Noorjehan. Mehdi Hasan has a very soulful voice which makes him one of the greatest ghazal singers of all time! I would still rate Rafi as the best singer of ghazals in the sub-continent, but then I am biased! Also see the Youtube video of the song below. Enjoy the song below if you are reading this after Jan 25, 2007; otherwise play it on the left hand sidebar... Read more
Love is something that is new, fresh, alive. It has no yesterday and no tomorrow. It is beyond the turmoil of thought. It is only the innocent mind which knows what love is, and the innocent mind can live in the world which is not innocent. To find this extraordinary thing which man has sought endlessly through sacrifice, through worship, through relationship, through sex, through every form of pleasure and pain, is only possible when thought comes to understand itself and comes naturally to an end. Then love has no opposite, then love has no conflict. Read more
There is this phenomenon called "Cosmic Strings". These "fabric of space" called snags or strings are very heavy and great gravitational pull (one kilometer long string can have the mass of entire earth!). A new study says that these are actually remnants from the past universe!? Hmmm... are we saying that not just the earth, its life but also the universe dissolves and starts all over again? That is bad news for religion huh? I mean those boats and special animals are of no use.. are they? Now a team of scientists says there is some valid evidence that these elusive and exotic strings really do exist. They claim that traces of cosmic strings can be detected in the afterglow of the big bang. Neil Bevis of Imperial College London and his team used the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite to observe radiation called the cosmic microwave background. Read more
Mystics talk about moving beyond space and time. Scientists and skeptics laugh at that. Here is a guy who says he actually feels like he has stepped out of "linear time" as he is playing squash. He kinda goes faster by going slower! Can you stretch time? MIKE HALL has taught himself to stretch time. He uses his powers to make him a better squash player. "It's hard to describe, but it's a feeling of stillness, like I'm not trapped in sequential time any more," he says. "The ball still darts around, but it moves around the court at different speeds depending on the circumstances. It's like I've stepped out of linear time." Read more

This is a strange tale (sent by Vish), where a body took on the character of what it received. It not only welcomed the incoming transplant, but became it! 15 year old Demi-Lee Brennan was 9 years when due to some virus, her liver was destroyed. She had only 48 hours left to live. Miraculously, came along a 12 year old boy's donated liver. In a 10 hour long operation along with the heavy doses of Immuno-suppressant drugs, she got that liver. Everything was business as usual. 9 months later she had to be readmitted as her conditioned had deteriorated. That is when the doctors found her blood group was O+. Well, it had been recorded as O- earlier! O+ was the blood group of the donor 12 yr kid! Her parents were both O-, so she could not have been O+! The Rh (+/-) factor is inherited separately from the ABO blood types. Similarly to the masking effect of the O gene in ABO blood types, the Rh negative (Rh-) gene is also masked by the presence of a Rh positive (Rh+) genotype. Therefore, a person may have a Rh + blood type and can still have an Rh - gene (See the accompanying chart). Furthermore, 2 parents with Rh + blood types can have a child with Rh - blood type. So they did the tests again. And still she was O+! That showed the unbelievable - that her own blood group had changed to that of the donors! The head of hematology, Julie Curtin could not believe this. But this meant that the immuno-suppressants had to be stopped and NOT increased as was the prescription until then! Her body was doing the ultimate act of acceptance - quite unlike a regular and normal bodies - which reject donor organs! Rather her own blood was breaking down!! Read more
Hum tere pyar mein from "Dil ek Mandir" sung by Lata (music by Shankar Jaikishen and lyrics by Shailendra) This song is in Raag "Desh" - so it has a special attraction. Narcissism apart, this song symbolized for me the ultimate love for a long time. Although it has been expressed by a lady, but it could have been a man as well. The sentiments in poetry and the peerless voice of Lata (this period - early 1960's - saw her come up with the most romantic and peerless rendering of songs ever!), makes it a song that simply pries open your heart! One of my favorite Lata songs! Enjoy the song below if you are reading this after Jan 24, 2007; otherwise play it on the left hand sidebar... Read more
