Well, this is the strangest robbery I have seen! Every bit of food came very expensive for this rich guy whose USD 700k worth car was stolen right off the restaurant parking along with the chauffeur! Thieves have stolen a Maybach luxury limousine worth 530,000 euro ($777,000) while the car's owner had dinner in a Moscow restaurant, Russian media reported Wednesday. Thieves bundled the owner's chauffeur into the back seat and threatened to kill him, the Kommersant newspaper reported. The driver was later abandoned outside Moscow's ring road. Read more

Just found this article on TOI site by Swami Aiyar. It explains the genesis, life and end of Khalistan mess very well and paints parallels with the situation in Pakistan. I agree with him completely! Whenever anyone has raised monsters, you ultimately get eaten up by it. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sant Longoval, and now, maybe its the turn of Musharraf. The similarities are striking. For decades, the Pakistani Army and politicians nurtured Islamic militants, to use them as a tool in Kashmir and Afghanistan. But now, a la Frankenstein, the monster has turned against his creator. This parallels India's own experience. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the Sikh militant, went from strength to strength in the 1980s because both Indira Gandhi and Sant Longowal of the Akali Dal wooed him. Indira backed him against the official Akali candidate in a minor election. Longowal used him to polarise politics along religious lines, hoping to ensure Akali political dominance in Sikh-majority Punjab. Indeed, Longowal let Bhindranwale occupy the Golden Temple and launch a reign of terror from there. Ultimately Indira sent in the Army to kill Bhindranwale. But militancy in Punjab continued, and she herself was killed by Sikh militants. So too was Longowal. Both paid for nurturing monsters. Read more

If you want to be a true doer of divine works, your first aim must be to be totally free from all desire and self-regarding ego. All your life must be an offering and a sacrifice to the Supreme; your only object in action shall be to serve, to receive, to fulfill, to become a manifesting instrument of the Divine Shakti in her works. You must grow in the divine consciousness till there is no difference between your will and hers, no motive except her impulsion in you, no action that is not her conscious action in you and through you. -Sri Aurobindo Read more

Says Musharraf: "The day when there is no turmoil in Pakistan, I will step down," he said. "I am not a dictator, I want a democracy." What he does not say: I created the turmoil! So, its a nice merry-go-around. Create turmoil and then claim your rule based on it - and it longevity to last as long as this turmoil does! Cool! Some people are also saying that this fight between Bhutto and Mushy is all staged.. for the benefit of each other! Lets see.. Read more

Today, 100 years ago, was the first flight of a helicopter. But that was not the only thought on the wings.. In China - in 400BC, some prototypes of helicopters were made as well.. One hundred years ago Frenchman Paul Cornu piloted a twin-rotor helicopter of his own design, and rose about one foot (0.3 meter) off the ground. He hovered for about 20 seconds. Or he didn't. A century after that maiden flight, some engineers and historians question whether Cornu's craft could have taken wing as he described it. But despite the skepticism, most helicopter historians -- especially in France -- still mark the first helicopter flight on Nov. 13, 1907. That makes this centennial the perfect time to take a look back at the long history of stationary flight, from its roots in ancient China, to concept vehicles being touted as the flying cars of the future. Goes to show how fast the world of aviation has changed over the years! In just 100 years, the world has built kick-ass helicopters from this frame in the air kind of contraption. With A380, now a reality, the world of aviation can only go higher! Read more

I have seen many explanations of "knowledge" and what it is to "know", but this seems to be the best way to put the difference between Knowability and Witness-ability. I have a high regard for Avtar Singh... I think his thoughts are well rounded and deep in their meaning! Un-know-ability does not mean un-witness-ability. Unknowable exists only relative to the frame of reference of the ego that wants to know it all. As long as there is a desire (of the ego) to know it all, there is un-knowable. When ego dissolves, the unknowable becomes witness-able or the object of awareness of the egoless awakening. Read more

In one book, which I found very insightful - Culture and Prosperity by John Kay - Kay argued based on economic and historical data dating to last 300 years on how there was correlation between different cultural aspects and prosperity. One of his findings was that Christian nations are more prosperous. But out of the Christian denominations, Protestants are better off. He did not go into the religious differences etc, but he drew a correlation. To me that was significant! Read more

Here is another reason to become a vegetarian. You will probably have better defenses against Alzheimer and dementia! A diet rich in fish, omega-3 oils, fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of memory-affecting diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's, a new study says. But consuming omega-6 rich oils could increase the chances of developing memory problems. Findings of the study have been published in the November issue of Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Read more
