Do you see this ballerina move clock-wise or counter clock-wise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain if counter-clockwise then you use more of the left side brain.Well try as I might, I couldn't see the counter-clockwise movement at all! So, I guess I am hard-core right-brained person!! The site says that: Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. Really? When there isn't enough money, people become innovative! In Punjab, people created Maruta - a small vehicle - out of bullock cart trailer. Assembled in the sugarcane fields of UP and Punjab, this bare bones transport is put together using a pump, a wooden plank and old tyres. It has a 20-seater bullock cart trailer attached to its rear. A steering is jacked into the shaft and the 12-horsepower pump engine is hand cranked to give speeds crossing 20km/hour. Now, this kid in Nigeria has created a helicopter in his backyard out of a car and a motor cyle. Here are the details of how he built.. go ahead and try one out: "It took me eight months to build this one," he said, sweat pouring from his forehead as he filled the radiator of the banana yellow four-seater which he now parks in the grounds of his university. The chopper, which has flown briefly on six occasions, is made from scrap aluminium that Abdullahi bought with the money he makes from computer and mobile phone repairs, and a donation from his father, who teaches at Kano's Bayero university. Read more

"I have something to tell you, white mouse," she said. "Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia to-day in the hospital. He was ill only two days. The janitor found him the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn't imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and a ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors mixed on it, and - look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's masterpiece - he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell." ... last leaf is a story by O Henry.. Read more

There seems to be a divide amongst the Bschool graduates in India. Those from metros and top-tier MBA schools are going for the corporate jobs, while those in the second tier cities are opting for the public sector. Students from those business schools which are located in tier-II cities, such as Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jaipur, Indore, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune, expressed eagerness to join `scheduled A' public sector units (PSUs) like ONGC, NTPC, IOC, GAIL, HPCL, BPCL, SAIL, MTNL, said the survey by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). Read more

I was thinking of saying this myself .. but when I read this at Eternalsoul's site I finally came to the point of writing about it! Every one in the Indian media is gloating over the victory of Bobby Jindal. But who is this Bobby (Piyush) Jindal? He is the son of Indian immigrants and who converted while he was in his undergrad college - because he found in Bible what he couldn't find in Hinduism. He laments the fact that his parents could not forgive him, but he hardly ever understands why he could never get to see their point of view. In my view, he is as opportunistic as the politicians come. From a devout Hindu to a converted Catholic seems to be an excellent story for the right wing Christian Republicans as the ideal "immigrant story", but to me it has clear stamp of opportunism! Read more

I hadn't heard this small verse from Pyaasa in a long time. This morning I happened to get it on Youtube. The song slowly and sensitively moves into one of the most touching songs aout prostitution probably ever written in Indian Cinema! The fantastic cinematic genius of my all time favorite director shines in this small clip of the verse and then the song. The brilliance of Sahir Ludhianvi's poetry and the understated purity of Rafi's voice and the pathos filled direction and acting of Guru Dutt probably makes this small sequence as one of the most sensitive ever done in Indian cinema! All these guys - SD Burman (fantastic as a music director), Guru Dutt, Mohd. Rafi, and Sahir Ludhianvi - combine as THE top team of people I have ever seen assemble in any one movie. It is, therefore, a relief and befitting that Dilip Kumar did not take this role and Guru Dutt hesitatingly took it up himself. I cannot come to believe that anyone could have done justice to it!
