Again.. this time the Islamic radicals are not only content with saying girl education is unIslamic.... they are actually moving on to BOMB the schools as well in Pakistan!! That should help their man-hood a bit.. wouldn't it? In what appears to be an escalating spree over the last year, extremists have bombed at least four girls' schools and circulated violent threats warning girls to stay at home. While no girls or school staff have been killed, girls in some areas have stopped attending classes - marking a direct blow to Pakistan's national enterprise of "enlightened moderation," which posits female education as a central pillar. Read more

I thought such things would only happen somewhere in the middle east! Well.. how America is changing - it is becoming very much like the Taliban ruled state. Now, no part of underwear can be exposed in public.. not even a bra strap .. or boxers under sagging jeans. This ordinance has already been passed in a few cities.. now it comes to Atlanta. Exposed boxer shorts and thongs would be illegal in any public place in Atlanta if the City Council approves a proposed amendment to the city's indecency laws. The target is young men who wear their pants low off their hips to show off the two pairs of boxers they wear beneath their saggy pants, said Atlanta Councilman C.T. Martin, a college recruitment consultant who sponsored the ordinance. Saggy pants are an "epidemic" that are becoming a "major concern" in cities and states around the country, the ordinance reads. Read more

First of all, I cannot understand this deal about iPhone and AT&T! Why should iPhone only be maded to work with AT&T. Apple is losing so many consumers and buyers in the process. It is really shooting itself in its foot... because by the time it realizes.. many other companies will come out with their own versions.. Anyways, here are a few hacking successes to make iPhone work with other carriers! Here is a 17 yr old who spent his summer to undo this madness from Apple.. and made the device work with T-mobile for the reporter. Probably there is another way that endgadget gave out which does not require any hardware hack... Armed with a soldering iron and a large supply of energy drinks, a slight, curly haired teenager has developed a way to make the iPhone, arguably the gadget of the year, available to a much wider audience.George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., spent his last summer before college figuring out how to "unlock" the iPhone, freeing it from being restricted to a single carrier, AT&T Inc. Read more

Nandi told me about this lady and her talk.. so I thought I will look it up. Man, does she have fire? Well, you cannot fault her for saying what she is saying.. for all that is correct. I personally, am tired of the "moderate Muslims" saying that Islam is peaceful and does not teach violence etc. and these Jehadis have hijacked Islam... well, when a few cartoons hurt Islam they take to the streets, but when killings and beheadings "hurt" Islam, then none of these moderates bother!! Even in a country like the US! Read more

It is amazing how small changes to make things easier creates immensely popular stuff. Potato Chips are one such thing! It might just look like a small thing.. but the world-wide sales of potato chips in 2002 was around USD 30 billion! And you would have thought that a potato chip was that useless snack? Well, it does account for around a THIRD of all Global Snack Food Market share!! It is believed that the original potato chip recipe was created by Native American/African American chef George Crum, at Moon's Lake House near Saratoga Springs, New York on August 24, 1853. He was fed up with a customer — by some accounts Cornelius Vanderbilt (although this has been disproved [1]) — who continued to send his fried potatoes back, because they were too thick and soggy. Crum decided to slice the potatoes so thin that they couldn't be eaten with a fork. Against Crum's expectation, the guest was ecstatic about the new chips. They became a regular item on the lodge's menu under the name "Saratoga Chips". They soon became popular throughout New England. Eventually, potato chips spread beyond chef-cooked restaurant fare and began to be mass produced for home consumption; Dayton, Ohio-based Mike-sell's Potato Chip Company, founded in 1910, calls itself the "oldest potato chip company in the United States" [2]. Before the airtight sealed bag was developed, chips were stored in barrels or tins. The chips at the bottom were often stale and damp. Then Laura Scudder invented the bag by ironing together two pieces of wax paper, thereby creating an airtight seal and keeping the chips fresh until opened. In 1934 Akron, Ohio potato chip maker K.T. Salem was the first to distribute chips in glassine wax paper bags. Today, chips are packaged in plastic bags, with nitrogen gas blown in prior to sealing to lengthen shelf life, and provide protection against crushing. Read more

While the infrastructure in Delhi has improved - the lawlessness has increased too. Delhi-ites have become an embarrassing bunch of indisciplined people as this incident shows. These idiots beat up school students!! Seven students of a private school in south Delhi, returning home in their school bus, were beaten up with rods and hammers after they objected to a group of hooligans passing lewd remarks on girl students at Tigri Chowk in Sangam Vihar on Wednesday afternoon. One of the students, Gagan Choudhury (14) developed acute breathing problems after he was hit by the hooligans on the chest and stomach with a hammer. He is in ICU at Batra Hospital. Three other children were also taken to the hospital, including Gagan’s cousin, Rahul Choudhary, who received stitches for wounds behind his ear. Read more

We Indians never learn from the past. I have often said that we don't need another Gandhi. What we really need is a bunch of Chanakyas with utmost national interest at their heart. Who realize that each INCH of Indian land is ours and ours to defend... EVERY ONE OF US! Most of the politics happens in and around New Delhi and the media remains obsessed by the Tinseltown. Anyways, I have little expectations from the prostitutes that the journalists in the entire media are anyways! But look at this article where the author discusses the mess that North East has become of late. Something for which the seeds were sown many years back... Read more

Pakistan is in a turmoil. Whether you know it or not.. realize it or not. It is. The options aren't great at all. Currently Musharraf has succeeded in alienating the same folks who raved about him through thorough mismanagament. Now, slowly but steadily (and to the discomfort of the US) Taliban is back and Al Qaeda is strong... so Pakistani army really has done nothing to help in that area! Moreover, Mushy may be overthrown by religious zealots - something that Lal Masjid episode amply showed! So, there is pressure on him to bring back "Democracy" in a hurry.. something that Mushy never wanted! Hmm look at the scenario: Read more

Some letters in the Pakistani daily Dawn are sometimes very interesting. Here is another one.. where this guys juxtaposes the melodies born out of the melting pot of Bengal, UP and Punjab.. against the "two nation theory" and partition. How partition took away - ruthlessly - the soul and the many wonders out of what has been great music and what could have been even greater!! Here is the letter: I have been reading Ayaz Amir’s column every Friday, ‘religiously’. It is never complete without mention of General Musharraf. Perhaps the one and only Friday column, when the general was not mentioned, was when he wrote about Saigal and Muhammad Rafee and the Old Songs broadcast from the erstwhile Radio Ceylon (now Sri Lanka Broadcasting Service). This is what music can do. It makes you forget all grudges and regrets.Ayaz Amir while eulogising these greats did mention perhaps unwittingly that they belonged to Punjab: “the land of the five rivers”, he said. This, of course, is true but music and art transcend all borders: provincial and ethnic. What would Saigal be without the tutelage of Punkaj Malik, a Bengali, or Rafee without the start he got in the film ‘Jugnu’ with his duet in the company of a reluctant Noor Jehan: Read more

Not that this was not totally unexpected, but it is really shameful for us Indians that after the lofty ideals and spiritual personality like Dr. Kalam.. we have this feather-headed, fickle-minded, egotistic idiot named Pratibha Patil!! Even after a month, she has not been able to approve a picture of her to be put up in the Indian embassies all over the world and the State Government offices. Apparently, she is waiting for a celebrity photographer like Gautam Rajadhyaksha to come and make her look like Aishwarya Rai? Even a month after her election as President, Pratibha Patil is yet to approve her portrait that will be displayed in Raj Bhavans and government offices across the country. Read more
