Everyone has heard about the Grameen Bank - which is run through the poor Bangladeshi villagers. But this bank (Children's Development Bank) is unique - it is by the kids, for the kids, of the kids!! Kids, who are ragpickers or doing menial jobs and not probably much educated. And it is run in a night shelter set up by MCD. A night shelter set up by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi becomes a buzzing hive of commerce at 6 pm every day. The doors of Children's Development Bank -- India's only bank chain run by children -- are open for business. Read more

Tall men fair better in terms of women and employment! They are more likely to get a mate faster and are better paid. I have noticed that taller men get easier promotions that the others. Somehow height carries a subliminal message of authority - misplaced though.. but unmistakable. This survey underscores these long held beliefs. So, guys size does matter!! Research has shown that a tall, broad-shouldered man is more likely than a shorter rival to have an advantage when looking for a mate, or for employment. Research published last year from Princeton University showed that both tall men and women earn 10 per cent more than those who are 4in shorter. The chances of a man reaching the equivalent in Britain of the directors’ boardroom are 3 per cent greater if he is 6ft 2in than 5ft 10in. Read more

Does race matter? It does matter in case of severity of disease and how nature affects people in different ways, says a study. This study studied how the incidence and severity of breast cancer was linked to race differences. Here is the result: Epidemiology studies have long showed significant racial/ethnic differences in breast cancer survival among U.S. women. African American women have poorer five-year survival rates, and more advanced disease at the time of diagnosis than white women. Whether these disparities are due to a difference between races in tumor biology or to socioeconomic factors that impact healthcare access and/or the physician-patient relationship continues to be unclear. One key piece of evidence is that, stage for stage, African American women have worse clinical outcomes than white women. However, staging disease is complex, taking into account tumor size and regional or distant disease spread. Also, there can be significant differences in survival within each stage. For example, survival at the same stage can vary by 40 percent depending on the number of lymph nodes with disease.Dr. Alfred Neugut from Columbia University Medical Center, Russell McBride from Mailman School of Public Health and their colleagues hypothesized that racial differences in survival within stage could be attributed to differences in tumor size and the number of lymph nodes with disease between the two race groups. Read more

Prof Hambarde says in his comments on changing of our language that we should not change the meanings of the specific terms in our Sanskrit language. I AGREE! He talks about Dharma and Sanskriti etc. I was recently reading a lecture of Swami Vivekananda (an intellectual GIANT of the last 2 centuries) and he says something about "Creation" and the Sanskrit word used for it - Srishti. Here is what he says: Our Sanskrit word for creation, properly translated, should be projection and not creation. For the word creation in the English language has unhappily got that fearful, that most crude idea of something coming out of nothing, creation out of non-entity, non-existence becoming existence, which of course, I would not insult you by asking you to believe. Our word, therefore, is projection. The whole of this nature exists, it becomes finer, subsides; then after a period of rest, as it were, the whole thing is again projected forward, and the same combination, the same evolution, the same manifestations appear and remain playing, as it were, for a certain time, only to break into pieces, to become finer and finer, until the whole subsides and again comes out. Thus it goes on backwards and forwards with a wave-like motion throughout eternity. Time, space, and causation are all within this nature. To say, therefore, that it had a beginning is utter nonsense. The more I read Vivekananda's words, the more I realize that the way amateur and useless minds in India who masquerade as seculars have infested the very fabric of our ethos, such a giant is not probably possibly within our midst! His oratory was clear and unmistakeably learned.... but it went beyond. It was as if Lord Krishna had himself descended to give another Gita to us... to re-interpret the Vedic knowledge which was mired in nonsensical dualist quagmire and rituals! Read more

Women are conservative when it comes to investing.. so says a study according to a study published in the July/August edition of Financial Analysts Journal.: In addition to finding that women are inclined to invest more conservatively than men, the authors conclude that women’s lower earnings levels will almost certainly lead to reduced expected retirement benefits. The tendency of women to retire earlier and live longer than men, yet have similar annual retirement needs, compounds these differences. Read more

I am not sure how to put any words to this audio/video.. but it does bring out my feelings on the relentless crap dished out by moderate Muslims - of "Islam is a peaceful religion" while millions are being killed... but I do NOT agree with his prescription. Some images on the video may be disturbing for some people but it is a public video so I couldnt change it. So I apologize if it hurts your feelings. I am sick and tired of this double talk and I know most of the world is... it is time that the Muslims become a little more honest in themselves and introspect.. otherwise I don't see a good end to all this: Read more

Taslima Nasreen is in India. She went to Hyderabad and was roughed up. In fact, that isn't all - in secular India - where attacks on MF Hussain were condemned and no one ever even talked of his hurting the "feelings" of the majority.. a POLICE CASE has been registered against Nasreen in Hyderabad!! What a shame! The pseudo-seculars in India are predictably quiet! And some Muslims did say something - but look at the twisted and hypocritic logic of these people: Read more

Rubab from Pak-times.com asked that it is important to know why a secular country "denies" the Muslims the right to education? I think to an outsider it is a fair question to ask. But lets look at it a little deeper. I have discussed a study that I had undertaken in late 1990's in UP (largest Muslim percentage). Read this article which refers to one main experience. Here are some of the telling instances that I saw: 1. Muslims are mandated to include Deeni (religious) education with the Duniyavi (worldly). That was one of the main reasons why many Mullahs make it imperative for the people to go to Madrasas. But a Madrasa education at the end of high school age leaves a kid with nothing to go to a college and get a real job! So, then it is discrimination . right? Well if it was any other country - the Government would have literally asked the community to take it or jump off a ship! But the UP government thought.. fair enough... lets give BOTH! So, started the Arabi-Farsi Board. Its curriculum not only includes the learning in Arabic, Urdu, Persian but also Quranic education, apart from the regular studies. And the standard 12th is equivalent to the UP board 12th standard. That is not all. The Government also pays for the teachers' salaries. That should be ideal right? NO! Since the "Indian" Government has started this board... Deoband and other Madaris pronounce it as "UnIslamic". At least that is informal dictat and everyone repeats the same thing on the ground. Read more
