Yesterday, I happened to chance upon the "Idiot's Guide to Life After Death" and it discusses the Near Death Experiences and then what happens after death. It was after reading the learnings from such experiences that I finally understood how true all the philosophical underpinnings of Vedanta is. First, of all lets see how people change after such an experience and it will give you a perspective into the basic and core teachings of the Masters. The book lists two set of changes - One it calls "Positive" and second it called "Negative". I think this classification is very superfluous and it will become clear to you when you read both the sets. So, lets read them: Read more

I believe all GREAT directors - when they direct a movie - embed an emotion .... underlying and intangible but very prominent in their movie. So primarily, great film direction involves being able to inject and steep your movie in a certain ethos that you espouse and can effectively create. It is the second nature or the very core of the director's existence. You cannot do it until YOU completely have it as your passion and core of being. So, only the most profound of people at their core become Great Directors. Technique is not what makes a good director Great - but his/her own CORE OF BEING! Guru Dutt's favorite emotion was PATHOS. Everyone who sees the movie can feel that pathos written all over EVERY bit of the movie. His movie Pyaasa was ranked by TIME as one of World's Greatest movies of all times. Of course, while compiling the list, the "judges" were obviously heavily Hollywood centric so most of the movies (in true tradition of most "World championships" in the US) are from ... well.. the US! If you saw Raj Kapoor's movie - it was ALWAYS that "other-worldly romance" that was the underlying emotion. He had - I think in Aag, his very first directorial movie - described beauty and romance as first purest dew drop being touched by the first rays of sun.. FANTASTIC visualization of what ultimate beauty and romance could be. THAT emotion was his underlying theme. Read more

Did you see this? Amazing huh! Ice balls weighing 50 lbs pelted homes from the sky in Iowa! There could be two reasons - either they fell from an airplane (one heck of chunks of ice that plane must be carrying on its outer body!!) or ice accumulated high up in the atmosphere. Both as you would have guessed would be VERY RARE indeed.. hahaha almost like impossible? So what was the reason? If it did accumulate that heavy why it didnt fall before it reached the weight of 50 lbs. Read more

I personally think that Yoga Vasistha - is probably the most profound book ever written in the entire mankind. Gita is probably the second most profound in my estimation. And it is because they do NOT talk about what a person ought to eat or drink primarily - but what the "Truth" of creation is. It is at a higher plane than most scriptures. Yoga Vasistha is basically the minutes of the class where Vasistha is teaching Ram and other students. And in one such conversations, Vasistha is explaining about how Prahlad got enlightenment - "with the grace of Vishnu". Although at the start of the book, Vasistha tells very clearly that it is self effort that is everything and god and divinity is ignorance. The Holy ones emphasise: persistently tread the path that leads to the eternal good. And the wise seeker knows: the fruit of my endeavors will be commensurate with the intensity of my self effort and neither fate nor a god can ordain it otherwise. So, Ram asked Vasistha - so how come he would say now that "Vishnu" was responsible for the enlightenment? Read more

This is one of the finest articles that has come out of the amazing B. Raman himself (by far my favorite commentator). Here he describes the details of two amazing stories in the Indian intelligence history - one a failure and one an outstanding success... and the frivolous and downright idiotic media that is in India. You just have to listen to the news to know how nonsensical the Indian media news coverage is. Journalists in India are no more than prostitutes. I have had personal experience with them during my stint while starting my company's Corporate Communications department and I don't have any more opinion of them. That is why thankfully there is blogging. Where, hopefully, you can read or listen to some sane and intelligent voices like Atanu Dey etc. Read B. Raman's latest book "The Kaoboys of R&AW - Down the memory lane". (See on the right) I wrote the first article on this subject for The Hindu in 1996, after the detection of the penetration of the Intelligence Bureau by the Central Intelligence Agency at a high level. Since then, I must have written at least 20 articles on this subjectOne of the past cases mentioned by me in the book is the penetration of the Prime Minister's Office by the French intelligence in the early 1980s. I was surprised by the kind of excitement or scepticism this evoked among the anchors of our TV channels and journalists from our media.'Prime Minister's Office penetrated by French Intelligence, says an ex-R&AW spy', screamed the headlines.'A claim without corroboration,' commented an anchor of NDTV.A commentator of the same channel sarcastically compared my reference to this to Jaswant Singh's claim of a mole in P V Narasimha Rao's office.'Is he trying to embarrass the prime minister?' asked the Jumping Jack anchor of another channel. Read more

Hmm.. it takes a lot to get up there in space these days! So, we some going up after getting a little tipsy. "Interviews with both flight surgeons and astronauts identified some episodes of heavy use of alcohol by astronauts in the immediate preflight period, which has led to flight safety concerns. Alcohol is freely used in crew quarters. Two specific instances were described where astronauts had been so intoxicated prior to flight that flight surgeons and/or fellow astronauts raised concerns to local on-scene leadership regarding flight safety. However, the individuals were still permitted to fly." Read more

Shahrukh Khan - the Indian movie super-star - is obviously a great star and a good actor. But that is not all to him. According to HT's tidbit, he also draws well! Shah Rukh Khan can draw with amazing draughtsmanship and could give some of the best sketch artists of the country a run for their money. He was also excellent at his studies in school and college. According to this fan site - he was excellent in electronics and biology. He also represented school and college in zonals and nationals in hockey, cricket and football! He actually captained his school in all three! Read more
