In a very interesting study, the scientists have found that the babies can differentiate sounds between their native language and a foreign one right from birth. Their study suggests that they are hooking on to their mother tongue right in the womb itself. Sensory and brain mechanisms for hearing are developed at 30 weeks of gestational age, and the new study shows that unborn babies are listening to their mothers talk during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy and at... The new year 2013 is a different year from the other years which were full of “repeats”! Such a year is not a simple one. The last time it happened – the Stock Market crashed. 🙂 It comes in rarely. Check out how. Read more
The following “Rape Map of India” is very interesting. In 2011, a total of 24,206 rape cases were registered in India, as per the National Crime Records Bureau. The map gives the distribution of the cases. Obviously, reporting of rape cases in India is not the same as reporting of a rape case in, say Sweden. Many go unreported in India. So, while this gives an indication of regional occurrence, it shouldn’t be taken as truth for overall numbers. As... Read more
Sanjay Srivastava is professor of Sociology at the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi. In his article in The Hindu, he suggests that somehow Swami Vivekananda’s photograph and his pose with folded hands somehow is responsible for installing “masculinity” in the country in the name of Nationalism. (Taking the aggression out of masculinity) Well, if I take that utterly ridiculous gobbledygook as some “creative psychological truth”, then Nanak’s upturned hand trying to bless everyone does the same thing. Here, a... Read more

This is what she wrote: “When I die, no one is going to remember... Read more

Hindu Marriage Act only allows one wife. Polygamy is a punishable offense. In Gujarat a system prevailed in which a man and a woman entered into a friendship agreement, a legitimate contract before a magistrate. It had a social and legal sanction and was popularly known as “maitri karar”. Later... Read more

Here is an interesting conversation which takes a peek into the lives of immigrants and see what can be learnt from these cultures. Remember this article I had written sometime back about how even people who are dead long back were “clicking on” Like button on Facebook for some sites peddling products, that while alive they wouldn’t have touched with a 100 ft long pole? (Now even the Dead Can’t Keep Away from Facebook!!) In that post there were instances where people – living – were also seeing pages showing up as “Liked” which they would never do. Apparently, Facebook has taken care... Read more
