Interesting post from Shaarique on Serendipity. The post says it all! A girl reacts as participants ride the train in the annual "No Pants Subway Ride" in New York January 13, 2007. The event is run by the group Improv Everywhere, and is intended to make people laugh and have an interesting New York experience. When asked, participants are not supposed to reveal the purpose, they are asked to respond with something such as, "I forgot my pants today." [Reuters] Read more

Is India's East Coast becoming India's Texas or the "Guf" region? Will we see a boom in its prosperity that is often seen in most oil rich countries? Well that is what the time will tell. But for now we have many OIl Companies interested in its potential and what it offers... India's east coast is emerging as one of the hydrocarbon hotspots in the world with 100 trillion cubic feet of gas and two billion barrels of oil in place. The two main basins in the area -- Krishna-Godavari and Mahanadi -- have shown a potential of nearly 18 billion barrels of oil equivalent gas in place. Read more

Vijay Sappani has written a blog post where he mentions a report by a Canadian who travelled to India and wrote back about his experiences - specifically the poverty in India. Vijay suggests that Indians get mad when someone talks about poverty in India and do not want this to come out in the open. He would like a series on India's set up: I will be doing a series of blogs here on social, politcal and democratic challenges that India faces and your comments will help pave the way I want to take the blog. In simple words, tell me what will be of interest to you and I will try to write on topics related to it. Fair? I like to challenge your creative juices to get ideas that might help improve the lives of many people in India and other countries. Many a times, the best ideas have come from people who are not professional social workers and who are not attached to it everyday. Read more

Man, the current Government is out on a witch hunt.. or so it seems. Another set of hangings.. Saddam Hussein's half brother and the former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court were both hanged before dawn Monday, Prosecutor Munqith al-Faroon said, two weeks and two days after the former Iraqi dictator was executed in a chaotic scene that has drawn worldwide criticism. Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, had been found guilty along with Saddam in the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims after a 1982 assassination attempt on the former leader in the town of Dujail north of Baghdad. Read more

There are many religions in the world but there is one that does not have very many adherents - or rather whose adherents are declining in numbers as the time goes on - is of Zoroastrianism. It is a very interesting blend of people - who are very rich and are successful in business and very peaceful too. Mostly very highly educated and successful, this group of people despite having been persecuted by many countries and religions have rarely ever retaliated! Most of these folks came to live in India after being persecuted by Arab Muslims. In 7th century, Arabs had overthrown the Sassanids and ruled Persia. There they persecuted the Muslims most by imposing the Jizya (a tax on non-Muslims). The people from that region came over to the Western coast of India to settle down and known as Parsis. Read more

MyBlogLog is a useful networking kinda place for bloggers. I think it adds to the blogging experience as it creates a combo of myspace and blogger kind of service. Yahoo has acquired this site now to add to its blogging service offerings. Last night, word began to circulate that Yahoo had purchased blog-centered social-networking service MyBlogLog for around $10 million. The Orlando, Fla.-based MyBlogLog, which launched in July, had been rumored to be a potential Yahoo acquisition for some time now. Read more

Dvorksy gives an interesting list of "Must Know terms for the 21st Century intellectual". (tip: Saira Mohan's Blog on Intentblog) Who, in his view, is an intellectual? Here is his defintion: To me an intellectual in this context is an expert generalist -- a polymath or jack-of-all-trades who sees and understands the Big Picture both past, present and future. While I value and respect the work of specialists, they can be frustratingly out of touch with other disciplines and some of the more broader applications of science, technology and philosophy. Given the obvious truism that nobody can know everything, there is still great value in having individuals understand a diverse set of key principles. Read more

The coming decade is a good time to be a woman in China! The woman will be in demand.. since there will a "shortage" of marriageable women by 2020! Due to traditional beliefs of male child supremacy many girl children are killed in the foetuses itself.. resulting is a great deficit in China. The story in India is the same too. China will have 30 million more men of marriageable age than women by 2020, making it difficult for them to find wives, according to a national report. The gender imbalance could lead to social instability, the report by the State Population and Family Planning Commission warned. Read more

Oprah has a school in South Africa. A controversial one given the vanity and flimsiness of people's world view.. but useful for the kids in there nevertheless! But the world is not full of Oprahs. There are regular folks who are doing similar work at way smaller budgets! Here is a good article on some: ....they don't have Oprah-sized pockets. Lidia Schaefer works as a manicurist at a salon in Washington, D.C., but she managed to build schoolhouses in Ethiopia. And Wendy Johnson, an administrative assistant here at NPR, works part time so that she has the time to hand deliver her contributions in support of projects overseas. We thought you'd be interested in meeting them and hearing about what they do. We broaden the story with a conversation with Dennis Whittle from Global Giving, an organization that helps small donors find worthy projects. We also talk with Gene Sperling, a leading economist who tells us why this is good for the world and not just the soul Read more
