Here is an interesting point made by Andaleeb - a fellow commenter on Intentblog - in context of the timing of Saddam's execution based on the Shi-ite religiouos beliefs: The only reason I can think behind Saddam's sudden execution is the international law which is very stringent and it forbids that people over 70 cannot be hanged.Saddam would've turned 70 in april. Secondly,Muharram starts from 21 january and shite observes 70 days of mourning.Maybe its all in the tim Read more

Interesting detail that has come out now on the Saddam execution! Man, this guy George Bush is out to shoot himself on his foot! Can he get some saner advisors? Turns out that one minor detail in Irag's emerging political protocol requires the Iraqi President to sign off on the execution of any convicted critical. However, on Friday as the zero hour for Saddam's execution approached, the current Iraqi President Jalal Talabani - a repeated critic and opponent of the death penalty - could not be reached and his signiture not ascertained. Read more

Here are some of my Predictions for 2007 on all fronts: 1. Dollar will decline and maybe US will avert a correction but the deficit will continue to balloon. 2. The tensions due (1) above will increase with China and Europe due to trade issues. Chinese element will also include the military/political muscle flexing as well. India will therefore become an important prop this year. So expect India to become an important "flavor" in American foreign policy. 3. The true implications of Iraq invasion will start becoming all too apparent! If I were Barrack Obama I would NOT run for the President! In fact if I were the head of Democratic party I would let the Republicans take that "honor" in the next President elections. By the end of 2007, the world will realize that Iraq was THE greatest mistake of the modern times. I would be very surprised if a major conflict does not break out in that region. Read more

A nice saying from a letter to editor in a Pakistani daily (presumably a Native American saying): When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover, you cannot eat money. Read more

A student at IIT Bombay in Powai killed himself by hanging! Why? He couldn't cope with the study load and the exams there at the IIT. Fact: He was a student who got in through the reserved seats category. He was an average student who happened to be at IIT due to his caste as opposed to his merit! His suicide note: I feel I could not make it because of the backlog of exams that I need to clear. But I want to thank all my professors who helped me immensely and I am sorry for causing all these things. Read more

Birth ceases when all attachments are severed; Otherwise, one beholds unceasingly the transitoriness of life. Attach yourself to Him who is free from all attachments. Bind yourself to that bond in order that all other bonds may be broken. -Tirukkural 35: 349-350 Read more

Saddam's execution was full of controversies and ironies. A person who tortured hundreds of thousands in sheer madness was brought down in a swift few minutes! Even he could not escape death. He was hanged in the very place where he tortured many! It is difficult to say whether Saddam's use of Islamic symbolism and articulation of religious beliefs was a reflection of his own change or a ploy of that infinitely evil mind to sow seeds of further tempest against the Americans! The fact remains that it can be (and probably will be) used by the terrorist to sheer evil effects! According to Sami al-Askari, a Shiite politician and close associate of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who was present at the execution, Saddam was subdued as a noose was placed around his neck, before a guard pulled a lever and ended his life. He said the process took about 25 minutes, though Saddam's death was 'very quick'. Read more

Indeed, no one has asked this question - Why was the execution done on Eid? Is there a message? Or is it SUCH a great coincidence that they came up - against all traditions - to execute a person in a hurry (if I may add) on a day that they SHOULDNT have? Oh, how the rub lies in the subtleties!! While talking about the timing of Saddam's execution Ambassador Hamid Ansari, former diplomat, told rediff.com, "Saddam's execution is unusual in more than one sense. In Iraq... in the entire Arab world and in many parts of world, except India, Muslims are celebrating Eid today. Nowhere in the world on a festival day has such an execution taken place. Why has been Saddam executed today? This is not a measure of justice; this is a measure of revenge and celebration. We agree that it's any government's job to do justice. People are punished for crimes but Saddam was executed with a message." Read more

The New Year is upon us.. how will the new year's economy shake out? Here are a few Billionaires speaking out.. What do you think? How do you see the economy in 2007 shaking out? WenChi Chen, Taiwanese (Net Worth: $2.4 billion) Source: Technology In China, but also globally, people are going to start paying more attention to so-called green technology. Environmentally-friendly things are going to become more important: how to save energy, how to save power. All over China, people are emphasizing saving energy. It’s almost like a government agenda. But we don’t see this as a purely Chinese event. Globally, we’re going to see more and more people becoming energy and environmentally conscious. We don’t have an unlimited energy supply. I think that’s pretty clear to everybody. Read more
