I was looking up some books on the philosophical side of Quantum by the "Masters" themselves! And I came across the "Encounters with Einstein" by Heisenberg. There were two comments that are worth putting down here for my readers.. as they tell a lot. The first one (by Michael Wischmeyer) discusses the worry and skepticism of that famous scientist, Heisenberg and also gives some good suggestions for further readings! These essays were first published by Seabury Press in 1983 under the title Tradition in Science. A new edition, titled Encounters with Einstein And Other Essays on People, Places, and Particles, was published in 1989 by Princeton University Press. Throughout his life Werner Heisenberg shared his enthusiasm for physics and philosophy, frequently giving presentations to general audiences. Several essays address the history of quantum physics. Others are more technical and include topics like cosmic radiation, particle physics, and closed-theories in physics. All essays are well-crafted and should be accessible to a wide audience. Heisenberg only met Einstein on a few occasions. The title essay, Encounters with Einstein, describes these encounters, including a final meeting at Princeton a few months before Einstein's death. While he admitted that he had never discussed politics with Einstein, Heisenberg did comment on Einstein's pacifism. Heisenberg does not discuss his own beliefs, nor his role in WWII Germany. Read more

Here are some interesting write ups that were posted by a commenter, Janet, at Intentblog in response to my article on Eternal Illusion What about the Collapse of the Brain-wave? “Consciousness causes collapse” is the theory that ‘observation’ by a ‘conscious’ observer is responsible for the 'wavefunction collapse’ in ‘quantum mechanics’. It is an attempt to solve the ‘Wigner's friend paradox’ by simply stating that collapse occurs at the first "conscious" observer. Supporters claim this is not a revival of ‘substance dualism’, since (in a ramification of this view) consciousness and objects are ‘entangled’ and cannot be considered as separate. The consciousness causes collapse theory can be considered as a speculative appendage to almost any interpretation of quantum mechanics and many physicists reject it as unverifiable and introducing unnecessary elements into physics. Read more

In October of 1927, Born, Dirac, Heisenberg, Pauli, and Bohr came together and expounded as well as accepted "an" interpretation of the new quantum world that was reeling in the aftermath of Schroding Read more

I know there are many controversy theories that people come out with. But this one is kind of special - in that it challenges a world famous fable/story. Now we all have been fed the Shahjahan-Mumtaz story. It used to fascinate me no end that how was Mumtaz distorted to Taj? I mean if at all it should have been Taz! Also, I really do not have much faith the "glorious" accounts of the Mughals that we have been fed.. they were distorted by the British and India's own communist historians! I just got this email from my sister which describes this Taj Mahal alternative story. Its doing its rounds on the net and I just wanted to chronicle it here.. and maybe one day, be able to do enough research myself to comment on it personally. Until then..please keep it in your mind.. Read more

Here is the most brilliant analysis of the economy in the US I have read in a long time! A must read!! Recent academic research endorses this view. US Fed researcher Jonathan Wright ("The Yield Curve and Predicting Recessions, 2006-07"), for instance, claims that if bond yields indeed stay at these levels, the possibility of a recession (simply negative growth) in the next 12 months is a significant 51 per cent. Equity markets, including Asian markets like India, are less pessimistic. The majority seems to believe in the clich?d Goldilocks scenario where US growth in 2007 is "neither too hot, nor too cold". Read more

Nice article on the chest beating by us Indians who have come to think that we literally own the world now. Well.. things are far from that! We still have a long way to go even to become a normal nation.. forget the super power tag! The Times of India has designed a neat logo that it sticks at the top of every article about India's thriving economy or growing international importance: a small spinning wheel, the national symbol, alongside the words "Global Indian Takeover." Sometimes the articles deemed to reflect the nation's unstoppable rise are persuasive - Indian corporate successes, rising share prices, Booker Prize victories. More often they are bewilderingly trifling. Read more

Is IE 7.0 trying to kill Firefox and other browsers? Here is an article which may suggest that... has anyone else had similar experiences? ...a CTO of a small business in Canada, calls me up the other day and said: "I downloaded IE 7 and I have tabbed browsing now." Within a few hours I was downloading the update "which is only for people who own legitimate copies of Windows" and browsing the net using it. I like the interface, some of the extensions they have for IE 7, but that was about it. Until that point Firefox and Flock coexisted with the new update and all was fine. Read more

There is something terribly wrong with the basic structure of Islam as it relates to the women. This fight over the bill in Pakistan to alter the mischief of Hadood Ordinance is one such example. Here is the description of Hudood Ordinance on Wikipedia: The Ordinance is most criticized for making it exceptionally difficult and dangerous to prove an allegation of rape. A woman alleging rape is required to provide four adult male witnesses of "the act of penetration", and if the accused man is Muslim, the witnesses must be Muslims themselves. Failure to prove rape places the woman at risk of prosecution for adultery, which does not require such strong evidence[1]. Read more

Things are changing rapidly in the Middle East and far beyond into Asia... the question is what will it be that will light the fire. Who will be the Archduke Ferdinand? Contrary to the overt calm, I somehow feel that the world is full of ready-to-be-lit "stuff" - the question is when? Why do I feel that way... its been quite a while in the recent history that the religious fundamentalism from all sides has risen to such a height. It is not about a religion.. but the extremism of ideologies that creates an atmosphere which is super charged and can create the light that can trigger a big fire. Nothing makes people baser and barbarians than the conceit of having a "Higher Purpose" to fight for. What better could that "Higher Purpose" be than one for the "Ultimate Savior" - Mohammad or Jesus? Self Righteousness is a powerful anecdote against all remorse caused out of civility! As the moderate civility thins off in every region.. the wheel of war will meet the road.... Read more
