Sad News from India! Indian Mumbai train bombings. 135 are reported dead, 200+ dead and there were 8 serial blasts. There were blasts in Jammu & Kashmir this morning too. Here is the lowdown from a fellow commenter on Intentblog, Navin: This evening, Mumbai was rocked by 8 serial blasts along the local train line at various places between 6:24 PM and 6:35 PM India time. This, as you can guess, is the rush hour when people go back home from their offices. Around 105 persons are reported dead and over 250 are injured. I'm getting a feeling of deja-vu as just a few days back I had written in Rahul Bose's thread that one would travel in the local Mumbai trains only if one was feeling suicidal. 🙁 The local trains were subsequently halted for checking for more bombs, which resulted in a traffic congestion problem on the roads and many people had no option but to walk towards their destinations. The bombs exploded in the first class coaches. These explosions followed the explosions which took place in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir in the morning. Explosions in J&K don't make headlines any more and are considered routine. (sic) It is too early to say whether the blasts in these two locations were related or not. No terrorist organization has taken responsibility for the blasts yet. But one can safely say that world politics today has gone to the dogs. But one thing has been proved once again that the people of Mumbai are very resilient and I am sure that they will be back to business as usual, tomorrow morning. Read more

Why did Zidane butt his head into Marco? Here are two possible interpretations from an email from my friend, Howard Davis - a Yoga Teacher in LA. The first one is from a lip reader.. An Italian lip-reader last night claimed to have deciphered the words Marco Materazzi said to Zindine Zidane that provoked the French captain into butting him in the chest during Sunday's World Cup final, the great midfielder's final act before a red card ended his career in top-level football. According to the BBC, Materazzi said, "I wish an ugly death to you and all your family," and then told Zidane to "go fuck yourself".*********************** Read more

Another example of clueless and backward politicians who are ready to set the country back for their personal interests and constituencies which would rather earn off of no work than even move their hands and legs! I had once argued that the Public Sector employees salaries are like Institutional Beggary!! The Government should close all the factories that do not and, indeed, cannot run efficiently and profitably and simply send a monthly check to those good-for-nothing employees with "Monthly Begging Cheque" written on it! Let us at least save on the other fixed and variable cost!! Read more

Based on my entry Allah vs Other Gods: Tolerance in Islam I got some interesting comments on desicritics post. Here are some: what about:guru nanak. he was later, so no.buddha. was before, so possibly.sai baba. now, so no.to worship allah or ?? , the rivals for the mekkans were Lat, Uzza and Manat deities. this doesn't change the nature of allah or Uzza, but this is not a statement about their existence , just that they were being worshipped at the time and people converted for practical reasons.. ...depends on the understanding .//the point of 60,89 was to not offend first, and to take offence when attacked. it certainly is not relativist about religion - any one will not do, but dont offend.yes i agree the line between muslim and non-muslim is quite clearly delineated, but in practice this was not so. because in reality there are shades. and mixture of influences. such as in the popular religions of today.- Gazelle Read more

I haven't seen Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth", although it is high on my agenda to see. Here is a blog post on this movie on "Blog or Die". The author brings out an interesting point based on the chart of the Ice-Ages and the level of Oxygen/CO2. The movie presents many facts and draws conclusions. I want to separate out what is fact from what I have questions about. Fact List: Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. That means that CO2 tends to allow light through, but not heat. That's a little like when you leave your car windows up on a sunny day. The light streams in through the windows, but the heat doesn't radiate out through glass as well. There is twice as much CO2 in the atmosphere than there has been at any time in the last 600,000 years. We know this because there are ice core samples taken in the Antarctic. Ice is deposited in recognizable annual layers, and schentists can measure the CO2 in the various layers. There is a strong correlation between the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and the global temperature. The global temperature can be inferred through the ratio of two isotopes of Oxygen in the ice cores. One can see by looking at a time-series chart that CO2 in the atmosphere tracks temperature. Read more

Here is an interesting newsof Pepsi coming out to help nab Coke officials who were trying to sell Coke formula to Pepsi. The question that everyone would have is WHY? Why would Pepsi not want the formula of Coke out - which could be a death knell for Coke? Is it just plain altruism? The three, who include an executive administrative assistant at Coke, were charged with wire fraud along with stealing and selling trade secrets. Federal prosecutors in Atlanta say the trio sought to sell the information in deals worth as much as $1.5 million. Federal prosecutors said Coke learned of the theft from Pepsi, which provided the company with a letter from an individual claiming to be a high-level Coca-Cola employee offering "very detailed and confidential information." "We just did what any responsible company would do. Competition can be fierce, but it also needs to be fair," Pepsi spokesman Dave DeCecco said. On hearing from Pepsi, Coke alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which began an undercover operation. "While this breach of trust is difficult for all of us to accept, it underscores the responsibility we each have to be vigilant in protecting our trade secrets," Neville Isdell, chairman and chief executive of Coke, the world's largest soft drink company, said in a memo to employees. Read more
