There are some pioneering experiments in India that are using technology and computers to better the lives of people who were hitherto poor and did not have many options.  E-chaupal is one.  This is another experiment from Microsoft to better the lives of the salt miners In Kharagodha, a small and arid salt-mining village in western India, it would seem that all the necessary steps are being taken to make personal computers a tool that actually improves lives.  Thanks to a small grant from Microsoft, the local miners union here is running computer classes for the miners and is setting up a digital lab to test the quality of salt extracted from the mines.   In the past, miners in this small town were little more than surfs who toiled their lives away in the mines.  The middlemen, who brought the salt to market, provided the miners with enough food and drink to subsist and kept them in the dark when it came to the value of their salt.  Because of Kharagodha’s remote location, its miners had no way of contacting the outside world and had no choice but to resign themselves, generation after generation, to the meager compensation that the middlemen provided.  In the meantime, the middlemen profited handsomely.Chandubai, a local labor leader who helped get the Microsoft grant, is now in the process of creating a database, which details the value and profits of salt.  Through a translator, Chandubai explained to NPR how he expects the computers to improve the lives of the miners: “I use the computer database to keep track of the quality of the salt. We know the market price so we can help the miners to get a fair price for their product. Best of all, we can cut out the middleman.” Read more

Africa is the final frontier.  I somehow feel that India has a huge headstart given that Indians are already well-enconsed within that continent and a huge trade goes on.  But Chinese are very diligent when it comes to forging ties in Business. I was reading Tom Friedman's article the other day as to how should the Latin American countries look at economic growth.  He cited a "Chinese Model" and an "Indian Model".  Since China's main concentration is on manufacturing, its hunger is for the cheap and abundant raw materials from Africa.  India, on the other hand, according to him has invested and concentrated - not so much on infrastructure and manufacturing - on Human Development as developing  its citizens so more people are better educated.  I am not sure how much of that claim is correct (I believe China has a better literacy ratio than India).. but given the off-shoring of intellectually oriented work to India - so it is not surprising that perceptions are on those lines. Observers will watch Dr Singh's visit to Africa keenly as the region is considered the hottest emerging economy after Asia. Read more

This is a new blogging client that I intend to use.  It integrates the Amazon as well as Chitika ads and so offers a way to blog but also make some money to pay the bills.  It also is cool since it seamlessly integrates the content from Google and Flickr! Will see how it works and run a review in the days to come. Read more

Pepsi Factory workers seem to be having far too much fun in their plants!!  They even forget what they are packing in the bottles!!  Or are they mistaking these bottles for some female human anatomy?? Pepsi should thank their stars that this happened in India.. had it happened in the US they would be on Jay Leno and other stand-ups by now and have to pay millions!! Soft drinks manufacturer Pepsi has been ordered to pay 20,000 rupees ($445) in damages to a man from Delhi who found a condom in a sealed bottle. Read more

An Engineering Miracle from the Chinese Govt.  Although it is an attempt at usurping the Tibetan land by the Chinese Govt., but it is upto the Tibetans as to how they would like to use this.  Sometimes it is better to just use the opportunities one has gotten to move ahead in life.  Utilizing the methods to prosper that can be available within China could benefit Tibetans too... in turn it can also destroy their culture and heritage because China is not known to be particularly kind to a spirituality based culture in any case! China's new train from Beijing to Tibet arrived in the ancient capital of Lhasa Monday, ending its maiden journey after climbing to elevations so high that ballpoint pens and packaged foods burst. Read more

And how in the world is that going to help GM's deeply troubled financial structure?  In my Humble Opinion - joining with GM is straightening the Deck of the Titanic! Its going to sink in any case! If it materializes, the deal would create a huge auto alliance with annual output exceeding 15 million vehicles and commanding nearly one-quarter of the global market share, according to Kyodo. It remains unclear how much the investment would cost. Read more

Ok.. I think its time NASA forgot the outer space for a little while and concentrated on that stupid foam thingy for a little while!! Its no fun reaching for the stars when you cannot even get the foam stuck on your machine properly!! And your rocket is still on the take off pad until now!! NASA inspectors found a crack in the foam insulation of space shuttle Discovery's fuel tank and managers were meeting on Monday to decide how the crack might affect Tuesday's launch. "It's in the insulation near a bracket on the external fuel tank," a NASA spokeswoman said. The crack was found during a routine inspection overnight. Read more

Interesting story on how to create a buzz for your start up! These Social Networking sites can be used to an advantage that is difficult to buy elsewhere! I have another website for SAP professionals and I have found that sending out mailers on Yahoo 360 as well as joining the Yahoo Groups to advertise for it has been fairly successful. I tried Google Adsense for a month and that was almost useless for us. So, for that site its basically been either word of mouth, or Google searches, or through Yahoo group mailers! Like many college students, Stephanie Madesh enjoys socializing online with friends through networking site MySpace.com. So when she began planning to create a Web-based apparel company this past spring, she thought MySpace would be an ideal place to court her target demographic -- young women like herself. Ms. Madesh created a profile for her start-up, Kalon Clothing (www.kalonclothing.com and groups.myspace.com/kalon), on MySpace a month before her Web site went live to create some buzz about the company. Since then her business's profile has drawn more than 850 MySpace members. The company also has posted about $1,000 in sales since May, netting the college senior a profit of about half that amount, she says. Read more
