Pakistani Generals and their families generally speaking live in a world of their own. They create scenarios that they assume to be realities and then go on with life living by them! Pakistan has lost every war and skirmish that they started with an aim to win or pain India.. In fact they even lost half of their country and still they just cannot live in reality!! Such cheap publicity is part and parcel of that society of the Generals and their families. To a Pak-watcher this is fairly common.. Enjoy yourself with another dose of nonsense from the son of a Paki General-President! Read more

This is a fairly popular poem but one that I liked a lot. Just for the record on my blog I would like to put it in here. oooO (....).... Oooo.... ...(.....(.....)... .._)..... )../.... .......... (_/..... oooO (....).... Oooo.... ...(.....(.....)... .._)..... )../.... .......... (_/..... One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. Read more

Fear of reinforcing negative stereotypes, Claude Steele finds, hampers the ability to succeed. The idea is now central in affirmative action and job discrimination fights. Read more

A threat to self-image can cause underperformance, Steele explains. Though an individual may not necessarily identify with stereotypes about his or her group, the realization that the stereotype is there can be distracting enough to cause underperformance. This has been studied in African-American students and in women. In particular, studies of women in mathematics showed that different stereotypes yield different outcomes in situations. Read more

"We need to be treated as special kids in special schools" Shonya (name changed) said to the Cultural Diversity Manager. The Cultural Diversity Group (CDG) had been set in this Big Four Consulting firm and the Manager was in Texas to kickstart one chapter here. We had come together from different backgrounds - Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Indian Americans and Indians, as well as African Americans. Shonya, was an African American Consulting professional with an MBA from a top 15 MBA school in the US. At that point the rest of us shrugged and looked at each other. Finally, one of us said that we did not want that kind of "treatment". We were just as normal as others were. Needless to say that the CDG chapter in Texas did not go very far. Read more

Since I am fiddling with this Drupal installation to cram in more stuff.. here are some more tools on my blog: - Now, if you are a regsitered user, you can post on this site thorugh an email. Just like I am doing right now. This kind of like the feature that Yahoo Group has in that you dont necessarily need to use a blogging client or be "in" Drishtikone. - I have used Talkr.com to create a "Listen to this article's abstract" link and a podcast chiclet. This is not an ordinary podcast - it actually reads out each entry. So all the text entries are simply read out to you!! This can be useful to those who might want Read more

Begani Shaadi mein Abdullah Diwaana (Abdullah is getting crazy during the wedding of a stranger) Basically, this phrase means that the event is occuring with relation to total strangers - but you are getting worked up. Something like that has been happening - and happening repeatedly in Bangladesh.. The news byte below was from June 17th. It happened again last night during the Germany vs Argentina match. Latin American teams are favorite with the Bengalis in India and Bangladesh - so it aint surprising for one who understands how crazy the Bengalis can be! Funny thing is two totally stranger teams are playing (and your country is not even in the tournament ANYWHERE) and these folks end up destroying their own public property!!! Read more

Interesting article from Francois Gautier on Anti-Brahminism. It is true that the way the media presents stuff today it has become a major problem for many people to admit they are Brahmins. The anti-brahmin wave keeps the caste system as much alive as past Brahmins' hard attitudes did! Hanging a Killer's Son is no Punishment for the crime!! The first article published by rediff on Brahmins as an underprivileged community, brought a flurry of reactions, mostly of surprise: "What, Brahmins as toilet cleaners, coolies, rickshaw pullers, priests earning less than Rs 150 a month... How is it possible, we always thought that Brahmins were a rich, fat, arrogant community?" Read more
