India and US have been moving ahead in their relationship fast and furious! Is it good for India or not is a good question. US is not very reputed when it comes to maintaining long term friends. Its friendships are more short term and strategic... unlike that with Soviets/Russians. The truth however is that at the end of it all - India will be better off by being the regional power in the Indian Ocean and Asia. An amendment sponsored by Rep.Edward Markey (Mass,D) to ensure that broadband providers "do not block, impair, degrade, discriminate against, or interfere with the ability of any person to use a broadband connection to access, use, send, receive or offer lawful content, applications or services of the Internet" was defeated by 269 votes to 151, the split falling down party lines. I have so often heard people extoll the "virtues" and how one should become good as if that is the ultimate goal of the spiritual journey. I have disagreed. The reason is that most people steeped in the Vedic/Hindu philosophy keep reading Gita and talking about its philosophy and yet stress on the argument above. If you were to read Gita - it becomes very clear that Maya - or the Illusion comprises of three gunas - Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic. Prez Abdul Kalam is a special person - I think this is something that every Indian realizes. He is not the usual kind of politician or even citizen! Much as honest Dr. Singh, the brilliant PM of ours is.. he seems to have at many times compromised on truth and integrity when it came to the crunch. I am not sure whether he an "ass-kisser" of Sonia or generally a timid soul who cannot be firm.. but there have been enough times when he disappointed me BIG time!! The Office of Profit controversy that was started by the Congress Party always had a streak of connivance about it.. and coming from the Congress it was hypocritical, if anything! All their people have managed and owned the public trusts while in the Parliament from Najma Heptullah to Sonia Gandhi. The Rajiv Gandhi Fund/Trust, the Nehru Trust or whatever have always been filled to the brim at the cost of the tax payers to virtually pay crores to the Gandhi family and their cohorts! My efforts in investing money had started way back when I was in India - but there I would never use much discretion or have any philosophy on investing. The result was extensive losses. The tide changed when I came to the US. It was my friend, Bobby Mahendra, who influenced my thinking and introduced me to Warren Buffett, the Master of Investing. I cannot say I have been the best of learners but over the years I have invested with a certain discipline - which has been useful and also humbling at times. For example, I never bought a dot com stock, or Qualcomm, or in the last few years the Google. This has meant that I have lost on "quick profits" but it also meant that I did not lose my sleep on the extreme volatility that accompanied these stocks!
