The awakened sages call a person wise when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results; all his selfish desires have been consumed in the fire of knowledge. The wise, ever satisfied, have abandoned all external supports. Their security is unaffected by the results of their action; even while acting, they really do nothing at all. Free from expectations and from all sense of possession, with mind and body firmly controlled by the Self, they do not incur sin by the performance of physical action. Read more
Different winds come from all directions. Some are clear, some carry dust, some are cold or hot, fierce gales or gentle breezes. In the same way sensations arise in the body--pleasant or unpleasant or neutral. When a meditator sees sensations as he does the winds, coming and going, clear or dust laden, fierce or gentle, he will fully understand them and be free from dependence on them. When he understands sensations perfectly, he will see beyond this conditioned world. Read more
I have believed that the Indian Middle Class is a major force in the world - it has virtually, against all odds, created the Tech Miracle in our country through sheer force and grit of the values steeped in education. They have their kids sent to Kota for IIT preparation, or to Delhi for IAS preparation, or to Australia for further education - even sacrificing their retirement monies. This group of Indians somehow collectively knows what is it in the world that gives the maximum bang for their buck with regards to their kids' future and they will go to any length to provide them for their kids. Under the onslaught of the ill-conceived reservations, they will find new avenues to rise! And the world of education business - the very group that brought the "Donation Engineering and MBA colleges" - and others like the top Univs of the US who are witnessing (and the trend will seem to rise with the Homeland Security etc.) a slowdown in their enrollments - will bring in more Private Educational Insititutes and Campuses to fulfill the hunger of the middle class for the best (most paying) educational experience in the world!! Did anyone see the movie "Alexander the Great" - with Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie?? In that movie, Alexander is shown to have come to India and there Indians are shown as almost primitive creatures with very little intelligence or culture. In fact, the illustration is of a timid and very tribal kind of people. The Movie researchers little realized that THAT period of Indian history was probably the most glorious ever. Chandragupta Maurya, at whose hands, Alexander's Army lost was arguably one of the greatest ever kings flanked by Chanakya - arguably the greatest political strategist the world has ever seen! Algebraic theories and other mathematical concepts circulating in ancient India, were collected and further developed by Indian mathematician Aryabhatta, who lived in the 5th century in Patna city (then called Pataliputra). He referred to Algebra (as Bijaganitam) in his treatise on mathematics named Aryabhattiya. A 12th century mathematician, Bhaskaracharya, authored several mathematical treatises; one of them, Siddantha Shiromani, has a chapter on algebra. He is known to have given the basic idea of Rolle's Theorem and was the first to conceive of differential calculus. In 1816, James Taylor translated Bhaskaracharya's Leelavati into English. Read more
