"GNU's Not Unix" (GNU) is announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman. The goal of GNU is to create a free, UNIX-compatible operating system, called the GNU system. Just wanted to make a note of this news byte - the first win by the combination of ONGC (The Indian Oil & Gas GOvernment controlled Giant) and Mittal Companies (of Lakshmi Mittal - the world steel baron).. why? because this is arguably the first example of an NRI backed Government venture for garnering strategic National Interests!! In its maiden venture in an international bidding round, ONGC Mittal Energy Ltd (OMEL) has won two prospective oil and gas blocks — OPL 209 and OPL 212 — in the Nigeria 2006 mini bid round. The recoverable reserves potential estimated from a few clearly delineated prospects in the blocks are expected to be over one billion barrels of oil and oil equivalent gas. OMEL expects to pump 650,000 barrels a day from the two blocks, compared to its domestic production of 600,000 barrels currently. Read more

For those who have not visited my blog and read the posts through RSS - wanted to let you know that I have a "Blog Network" on the left hand side bar. The idea was to give other bloggers a placeholders where they could link their blog and also I could get to know more blogs that I could visit and read that I would not otherwise. Obviously, more links at other sites helps the ratings of the bloggers who use this tool to link up with my blog.. and me too that I get a good eclectic type list going! Well, last week a "Bengali FOB" - a Bengali gal who emigrated to Canada had added her link.. and I visited her blog as I have mentioned above.. it is an awesome attempt to review and rate various books she reads.. please do check it out... I am not a particularly well read guy so for me it is good that someone can review a book for me... I can get to know of good books that may motivate me to read some one day!! Read more

A lot of people have asked me about what is "Hinduism"? All I can say is there is no such thing as a "Hindu Religion".. just a bunch of philosophies that combine together in an amorphous whole that have been termed as "Hinduism"! Here is a verity: Whatever is true of Hinduism... the EXACT opposite is EQUALLY true!! Nevertheless, here are some of the basic that I feel underline most of the philosophies: 1. Every Creation has Equal Rights: Although most texts in most religions say this, I have found that this is something most clearly enunciated in most Hindu texts. The "tolerance" towards other religions that many say Hinduism furthers is probably a reflection of this. Read more
