I did not realize that the wind power in India was getting ready for big times! But this article brings it out very nicely: With booming India looking to tap every possible source of energy, one area of focus recently has been wind energy, widely regarded as a particularly environment-friendly and renewable form of alternative energy. Particular attention has fallen on the sector because of recent big-ticket announcements by Indian wind-energy firm Suzlon and a top Indian businessman's foray into tapping wind energy. Adding a bit of welcome glamour to the field, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar have invested in windmill projects in the Satara district of Maharashtra and in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Read more

Here is an outline of the India Inc.'s plan on how the lower castes and the poor in India can be uplifted to more fully participate in the country's progress! The Government wants industry to actively assist and participate in helping the underprivileged move up the economic ladder — quota or no quota. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has responded with a detailed plan on affirmative action (AA), which its says, was a better alternative than quota in private sector. Read more

This is a good article on the differences between India and China as economies. I am personally for the Indian economy vs the Chinese. Not because of my nationality but because of the way they are shaping up. At least the Indian economy has an element of a self governance business element. Factories or offices come up based on an entrepreneurs estimate of ROI! Very little of that happens in China. The entrepreneurial base and the divergence in it can be amply judged from the Forbes Billionaires list this year. The Chinese Billionaires this year were 9 and the Indian number was 28!! This is not consistent with how the economies at present are stacked up! Chineses economy with its current strength should have had 10 times more millionaires vs India.. but that is not how it is... It points to the Chinese Govt.'s intervention in business and how IT decides what is good and what isn't and ultimately subsidizes or invests in those areas! In the short run - a great way to do things.. but in the long run... a sub-optimal way to run an economy! Read more

This is a fairly good article on the Indo-US Nuke deal! Why should India, with a spotless nonproliferation record, be denied access to U.S. civilian nuclear technology for electricity, while China -- which helped Pakistan and Iran in their efforts to acquire nuclear weapons -- can have it? The inequitable structure of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has resulted in built-in discrimination in favor of China and against India that has made it necessary and justifiable for the administration to conclude its civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with New Delhi. Read more

Someone, it seems, has gone ahead and created a video where the Air Force One is shown sprayed "Still Free"! But it so well done that it almost looked real.. such that folks actually had to check up to make sure it wasnt a real thing!! This is what happened! It was all a hoax. No one actually sprayed the slogan "Still Free" on the cowling of Air Force One. The pranksters responsible for the grainy, two-minute Web video — employed by a New York fashion company — revealed Friday how they pulled it off: a rented 747 in California painted to look almost exactly like Air Force One. Read more

While India's Prime Minister was delivering a lecture on the need to make the Civil Servants more efficient and effective.. our bureaucratic babus were.... well.. sleeping through the speech!!! This most wonderfully exemplifies the Indian situation!! Secrateries taking a nap during the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Speech on the occassion of Civil Service Day Function at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday/ Tribune Photo/Mukesh Aggarwal Asserting that the civil services has to reorient itself and be trained to deliver better services to the people, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today put several posers before the country’s civil servants, including whether the present method of recruitment was appropriate for inducting the right persons into government. Read more

Indian Stock Market's rise in the past few years has been phenomenal!! It is today the world's MOST expensive stock market! Will it continue that way? Don't know.. but the road to outsourcing does not seem to be abating anytime soon!! In fact, if anything the deals will just keep on getting bigger and bigger and more .. and more sectors and areas will be added to the offshoring juggernaut! India today is the most expensive market in the world. At 12,000, the Sensex trades at nearly 18 times the estimated FY07 earnings and just over 15 times the estimated FY08 earnings. Read more

This is a story that most of us have not heard ... yet! Kind of strange when it is regarding the real bad power situation.. but definitely worth a read!! =========== Sushanta K Chatterjee is a young technocrat who works at the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission. Having just released the thousand-page Commentary on the Electricity Laws of India, he knows well enough what is right, and not so right, with this sector. So I am pretty stunned when he categorically says that he would be more than willing to invest in power since the risk-reward equation is favourable. Read more

Look at this news item... To me its looks downright bizarre!! Specially coming an industry and lawmakers who were up in arms against the Chinese Petroleum company which was buying a US Oil & Gas company in a clear market transaction!! These jokers want even the private companies like Reliance out of the bidding process.. what exactly have they been smoking lately?? The latest round of bidding for oil and gas blocks in India under the National Exploration Licensing Policy 6, with recent roadshows in Houston and London, has drawn the attention of global oil majors. Read more
