One way to look at what Zia's rule did to Pakistan as well as his extremist and terrorism policy of strategic depth did.. it would be good to see the Per Capita GDP stats of Pakistan vs India for 1989 and 1999. In 1989 Pakistan was far ahead of India's stat.. but by 1999 Pakistan had been left tottering way back... It is interesting to see the "transformative" powers of the young Indian sportsmen and women! Earlier it was Sachin Tendulkar - who with his sheer attitude changed the outlook of the youth in India.. and now it is Sania Mirza.. with "I dont give a damn" attitude! Here is a piece from New Statesman's Jason Cowley It is difficult to believe that a slender, 18-year-old Muslim tennis player from India has the potential to change the world, but it is equally difficult to overestimate the effect Sania Mirza is having on millions of young men and women, and especially women, in the world's second most populous country. She is the first female Indian tennis player to be ranked in the world's top 40; indeed, she is the first significant female athlete of any kind, in a country where women have been typically discouraged from taking up sport. Mirza has the discipline, the tenacity, the flamboyance and, above all, the talent to go much higher in the rankings and, in so doing, inspire a whole new generation of Indian girls to express their hopes and ambitions through sport. Maoists have started getting into areas where nobody can detect them.. and creating an ability to strike at will! – Twin Blasts in Karachi

Another attack on the masses in the Muslim world... right after Jordan.. things are just getting too messy! A powerful blast outside an American fast food restaurant killed 2 people and wounded at least 15 others in the southern port city of Karachi this morning, police officials said. Six of the wounded are in serious condition, local media reported. The attack occurred about 8:40 a.m. near a KFC outlet in the upscale Saddar neighborhood of Karachi. The neighborhood consists of banks, international hotels and restaurants. People were heading to work during the morning rush hour at the time. Read more

The recently concluded Summit of Americas brought forth more fissures within the Latin American continent than were earlier visible to the layman's eyes! Hugo Chavez - that joker from Venezuela - and Fox - the Mexican Prez - are having a war of words! Here is the lowdown: Fallout from the recent Summit of the Americas in Argentina seems to have affected diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Mexico more than between Venezuela and the U.S. as was generally anticipated. And, things took a rather nasty and puerile turn last week when Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Mexican President Vicente Fox “a puppy of the [American] empire” for supporting the U.S. inspired Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) draft agreement. (One wonders what diplomatic words he has in store for Canadian President Paul Martin who [along with U.S. President Bush] is the other major sponsor of this free trade proposal.) Read more
