As a die-hard Washington Commanders fan, Jayden Daniels has my attention. Daniels has my attention not because he’s a rookie sensation bringing hope to a struggling franchise.

It’s not because he’s one of fifteen black starting quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL).  No, It’s not because of his great sense of style and award-winning smile (though these are qualities he possesses).

Daniels captures my attention because his confidence comes from having faith in Jesus Christ.

Let’s examine how a strong family structure, adversity, and football allow Jayden Daniels to glorify God on and off the field.

A Paternal Pathway

Following in His Father’s Footsteps

Jayden Daniels was born in San Bernadino, California on December 18, 2000. He is the son of Javon Daniels and Regina Jackson.

Jayden is Javon and Regina’s only child together. However, Jayden has three siblings: a brother (Jordan) and two sisters (Janae and Bianca).

Jayden credits his family for his accomplishments mentioning how one can not be successful without a loving support system.

Jayden’s loving foundation is built on faith in Jesus Christ. This is evident as he was raised in a Christian household that attended church regularly.

Jayden’s family also exhibits Christian values through their presence in his life. He honors his mother by calling her his rock as an ode to the sacrifices she made to ensure his success.

He also praises Reginia for not missing any of his games (except those with Covid attendance restrictions).

Along with honoring his mother, Jayden also praises his father for training him in the way he should go (Proverbs 22:6, New Living Translation). This biblical principle not only applies to the family’s church attendance.

For Javon Daniels, the verse applies to teaching his son the game he loves. Javon was a college athlete who played cornerback at the  University of Washington.

Javon passed his passion down to Jayden by placing a football in his hands at an early age. While Jayden chose to play a different position, he knows his father’s coaching helped him become a great athlete.

Jayden Daniels Overcoming Grief and Adversity

Losing Loved Ones

While Jayden pays homage to his father for his guidance, someone else ignited their passion for football.

In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul mentions how the genuineness of Timothy’s faith comes from his grandmother Lois. Similarly, Jayden’s love for football comes from his paternal grandfather.

During an interview with The Pivot Podcast, Jayden talks about how his grandfather taught Javon all he knows about the game. It’s amazing how his grandfather’s love for football became a generational blessing.

Sadly, Jayden also opens up about losing both of his paternal grandparents during Covid in the winter of 2021. The toughest part of his grandparents’ transition is their not being present to celebrate his biggest moments.

The Trials and Triumph of Jayden Daniels

While Jayden strived to play well to honor his late grandparents, grief is a difficult storm to navigate. For Jayden, the storm came during his third season at Arizona State University (ASU).

While his stats were not terrible, Jayden threw ten interceptions. This amount of turnovers is daunting for a quarterback who aspires to play in the National Football League.

In addition to personal struggles on the field, Jayden’s grief was compounded by uncertainty concerning the ASU football program. ASU  was under investigation for potential recruiting violations that could impact the entire team’s future.

(In April 2024, ASU was placed on probation, and received recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions due to the 2021 violations).

Knowing this, Jayden transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU). This decision infuriated teammates who trashed his locker and demeaned his abilities.

These trials could have broken anyone but Jayden stood strong because of his faith. James 1:2-4 encourages Christians to count it all joy when facing trials because they build character and endurance.

This truth is evident in Jayden’s life as he holds no grudge against his ASU teammates. He also acknowledges transferring to LSU was an opportunity to mature in his faith.

Maturity occurred under the mentorship of LSU Player Relations Manager Sherman Wilson. Wilson encouraged him to lean into his faith and believe in himself.

Faith and Football

Jayden Daniels is Unashamed of the Gospel

Jayden Daniels heeded Wilson’s advice in three ways. First, Jayden has a cross drawn on his left wristband.

The cross reminds Jayden that no matter what happens on the field, God is with him. This is true since God promises not to leave those who trust in him (Deuteronomy 31:6).

The cross also acts as a sign for coaches, teammates, opponents, fans, and media members about who Jayden Daniels serves. Jayden uses football as a way to shine his light before others so they can glorify the Father.

Jayden also shines his light through his work ethic. Many teammates praise Jayden for his dedication to becoming the best quarterback possible. This mentality embodies a model of good works that will keep people from saying bad things about him (Titus 2:7-8).

Along with his work ethic, Jayden also uses his success as a platform to glorify God. Jayden did this by crediting God during his 2023 Heisman Trophy acceptance speech.

Jayden continues to give  God the glory as a starting quarterback in the NFL. This humility causes Commanders fans to believe Jayden Daniels can usher Washington into brighter days.

NFL Accomplishments So Far

The Washington Commanders selected Jayden Daniels as the second overall pick in the 2024 draft. After nine games, the Commanders are 7-2 for the first time since 1996.

During this stretch, Jayden has a 71.5% completion percentage with 1,945 yards, 9 touchdowns, and two interceptions.

His impressive play has earned him several Rookie of the Week awards. One was for completing a miraculous Hail Mary pass to Noah Brown in an 18-15 win over the Chicago Bears.

I pray Jayden remains humble, dependent on God, and works hard to help the Commanders return to winning ways. I can’t wait to see what God does in Jayden’s life as he continues to pursue him and proclaim his goodness. “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.” Psalm 105:4
