Bam Adebayo and the Miami Heat

A Well-Respected Rival

Bam Adebayo and the Miami Heat are a must-watch National Basketball Association (NBA) team. Their culture, winning history, and love for the community make them a beloved part of the Miami area.

These characteristics also compel me to respect the Heat, though I’m a die-hard Los Angeles Lakers fan. I began paying attention to Bam when the Lakers and Heat faced off in the 2020 NBA Finals.

Below, I’ll reveal how Bam’s leadership embodies the Heat culture and his on-court success. However, first, I’ll highlight how his background, compassion for the community, and faith in Jesus Christ motivate him.

How Edrice Became Bam

From Newark to Pinetown

Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo was born on July 18, 1997. He is the son of John Adebayo and Marilyn Blount.

Marylin Blount raised Bam as a single mother since John wasn’t present in her or Bam’s life. Consequently, Bam is intentional about crediting her for every part of his success and who he has become.

Marylin also deserves credit for giving Edrice the nickname Bam as a toddler. Named after Bam-Bam from The Flintstones, Marylin gave him the name after he flipped over a coffee table.

This moment foreshadows the dominating force he’d become on the basketball court. Interestingly, it is the humble beginnings that Marylin and Bam experience that keep Bam grounded amid success.

Those humble beginnings began when Marylin moved herself and Bam to Pinetown, North Carolina. She provided for her son by working as a cashier at a meat farm.

While Marylin did her best, her income as a cashier meant she and Bam had to live in a trailer. Though tough, Bam believes this hardship helped him develop a strong bond with his mom.

This is because she made many sacrifices to provide the best care possible. One sacrifice was exchanging her queen-size mattress for Bam’s twin-sized mattress, as he had outgrown his bed.

Her selfless acts, Bam couldn’t repay, but he made sure to honor his mother by not causing trouble. Having such a wise mindset as a child helped him bring joy to his mother’s life

Embracing Adebayo & His Nigerian Heritage

Unfortunately, while Bam brought joy to Marylin’s life, his father, John, didn’t have the same experience. John’s absence provoked Bam, causing him to reject Nigerian heritage.

Bam believed it was pointless to learn about the heritage of someone who wasn’t in his life. Thankfully, as Bam matured into a teenager, he put this childish mindset away

Doing so helped him discover the beauty of his last name, which means “born in the joyful time.” Sadly, Bam never really got to know his father, who died in 2020.

Bam and his dad didn’t have a close relationship. But I believe John would be proud of the way Bam now embraces his Nigerian heritage.

Bam Adebayo Plays Basketball

From Trailer to Trailblazer

Along with embracing his Nigerian heritage, Bam’s childhood was spent developing a love for basketball. Basketball became an outlet, eventually allowing him to transition from living in a trailer to being a trailblazer for his family.

He began blazing his path as a student at Northside High School. During his junior year, he averaged a double-double with 32 points and 21 Rebounds.

That summer, he played for Team Loaded North Carolina, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team.  He earned the 2015 MVP at the Under Armour Elite 24 game.

Bam capitalized on a great summer and junior year by transferring to High Point Christian Academy for his senior season.

There, Bam averaged yet another double-double season with 18.9 points and 13 Rebounds per game.

Bam also

  • Led High Point to the state championship game.
  • Invited to play in the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic.
  • Named North Carolina Mr.Basketball (2016).
  • Played in the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic.
  • Played in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American game.

Bam Becomes a Wildcat

Bam’s athletic accomplishments in high school earned him a reputation as one of the top recruits in the nation. The University of Kentucky showed its faith in Bam by offering him a scholarship.

In one season as a Wildcat, Bam played 38 games, averaging the following per game totals

  • 13 points.
  • 8 Rebounds.
  • 1.5 blocks.

Bam was also

  • A  2017 SEC Tournament Champion.
  • Named 2nd Team All-SEC.
  • Named to the SEC All-Freshmen Team.

#13 Bam Adebayo

A stellar freshman season at Kentucky compels the Miami Heat to draft Bam Adebayo with the 14th Pick in the 2017 draft.

In eight seasons with the Heat, Bam has averaged the following regular-season totals playing in 567 games

  • 15.7 points.
  • 8.9 rebounds.
  • 3.6 assists.
  • 1.1 steals.
  • .9 blocks.
  • 75.6% free-throw percentage.
  • 53.7% field Goal percentage.

In the playoffs, Bam has played in 78 games, averaging

  • 16.6 points
  • 9.2 rebounds
  • 3.5 assists.
  • .9 Steals.
  • .6 blocks.
  • 75.7% free-throw percentage.
  • 51.7% field goal percentage.

Bam has also led Miami to the 2020 and 2023 NBA Finals and is a three-time NBA All-Star.

Additionally, Bam is third all-time on the Heat scoring list and needs fewer than 300 points to pass Alonzo Mourning for second all-time. He also holds the record for the most double-doubles in Heat history, with 238, averaging 26.4 per season.

Fans can expect this number to continue to climb. After all, he is just in his ninth year with the team and doesn’t desire to leave or retire anytime soon.

Bam’s success enabled him to play for Team USA in the Olympics. Bam made the most of his opportunity by winning a gold medal in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics.

Serving International & Domestic Communities

Bam Adebayo Supports Basketball Without Borders (BWB)

As a Nigerian American, Bam can choose to play for the Nigerian team in the Olympics. He has yet to take advantage of this invitation on the court.

Off the court, he’s utilizing the opportunities being an NBA athlete gives him by helping athletes overseas. Through Basketball Without Borders (BWB), Bam is teaching the game he loves to boys and girls in Africa.

Now these children get to play a sport that enhances their athletic abilities, develops discipline, and teaches life lessons. One lesson is what Bam refers to as the standard.

The standard, which he adopts from the Heat’s philosophy, motivates athletes to perform at their best while striving to win a championship. This standard embodies Proverbs 22:6, as Bam is putting youth on a path to success through core principles.

Reciprocating Miami’s Love with Compassion

One core principle guiding Bam’s willingness to help others is Proverbs 14:23, which he includes in his Instagram bio. Here, King Solomon says that hard work leads to profit, but talking leads to poverty.

Bam knows how it feels to deal with the challenges of poverty due to his upbringing. As a result, he strives to be the resource he once needed.

Bam does this by reciprocating the love Miami shows him through the Bam, Books, and Brotherhood (BBB) Foundation.

BBB helps Miami residents by offering scholarships to single mothers and high school students through BAM AIDE. Bam’s foundation also has a health and wellness initiative for students and families at Overtown Elementary School.

Bam recently donated mattresses to students at the Seed School and Thanksgiving goods to Miami residents with his girlfriend, A’ja Wilson.

Setting a Positive Example

3 Valuable Lessons from Bam Adebayo

These charitable acts teach young athletes that true success isn’t about overcoming poverty or other forms of adversity they face. Rather, success is about being a resource to those who are in the conditions you overcame.

For Christians, helping others is also a reflection of our hearts. Whatever we do to the least of these, we are doing to Jesus Christ, so if we truly love the Lord, we’ll show compassion to the needy.

Along with setting a positive example through charitable acts, Bam also shows readers how to handle fatherlessness.

It’s unclear whether Bam has forgiven John for being an absent father. However, he’s learned to embrace the Nigerian heritage his father gave him.

Bam’s new attitude about his heritage shows readers that they don’t have to reject their identity because they’ve been hurt by a parent. Instead, they can try to learn about their heritage and the positive qualities their absent parent possesses.

Who knows, they may discover why they’re good at a particular talent or what medical conditions they’ll inherit with old age. The hope is that in time, this discovery will help forgive an absent parent, realizing they need forgiveness from God just like you.

Another valuable lesson athletes can learn from Bam deals with leadership. In an interview with Inside The Heat, Bam encourages viewers to embrace the grind, remember that it’s not about them, and accept that leadership comes with scrutiny.

Heeding his advice will help athletes develop the work ethic, humility, and resilience that good leaders exhibit.
