1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray Without Ceasing

How Can Believers Pray Consistently?

1 Thessalonians 5:17 urges believers to “pray without ceasing” (New King James Version). But in a world where busyness is commonplace and daily responsibilities seem never-ending,  how can believers pray consistently?

Reverend Tyrone Queen (Pastor of Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Washington, DC) answers this question through a recent sermon. “1 Thessalonians 5:17: A Daily Pattern for Prayer” provides congregants with seven ways they can develop the discipline to pray regularly.

The inspiration for this sermon is Mt.Sinai’s desire to emphasize prayer and fasting during the first 40 days of 2026. Mt.Sinai even set aside the third Sunday in January to incorporate more time for intercession during the service

Knowing this, I’ll explain the historical context behind 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and what it means to pray without ceasing. Then, I’ll review the sermon, highlight one approach that stands out to me, and discuss my desire to grow in prayer this year.

The Historical & Scriptural Context for 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Paul’s Loving Challenge

Understanding the importance of prayer in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 requires looking at the verse’s historical and scriptural context. Paul writes 1 Thessalonians as a letter to the Church of Thessalonica, commending them for their ability to suffer well.

Seeing Paul commend such character comes as no surprise. In Philippians 4:11-13, he testifies about learning how to suffer well and be content through Christ, who strengthens him.

Along with honoring their ability to endure persecution, Paul also expresses his admiration for them. He likens his love for them to that of a parent with their children.

This parental relationship stems from Paul’s labor in Thessalonica. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and his explanations of the scriptures, Jews and prominent Greeks are persuaded.

Their persuasion proves costly as Thessalonian converts experience persecution for the Gospel and their association with Paul and Silas. Aware of their suffering, Paul assures the Thessalonians that their affliction isn’t in vain as he reciprocates their love.

Evidence of Paul’s love is revealed as he and his co-laborers share the Gospel and their lives with the Thessalonians. Like any loving parent, Paul praises the Thessalonian believers after Timothy testifies about their love and faith

Afterward, Paul challenges his “children” to mature in their faith by living lives that please God. The Thessalonians can honor God by

  1. Abstaining from sexual immorality and adultery.
  2. Continuing to love fellow believers and all people.
  3. Living quiet, hardworking, independent lives that earn the respect of outsiders.
  4. Having hope in Christ’s resurrection and return.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray Without Ceasing.”

After encouraging believers to live with hope of Christ’s resurrection and anticipation of his return, Paul offers some final instructions.

These instructions urge believers to exhibit holy conduct by

  1. Showing honor and respect to leaders.
  2. Living peacefully among each other.
  3. Repaying evil with good.
  4. Not stifling the Holy Spirit.

While not the full list of instructions, it’s interesting that Paul includes praying with ceasing, with not stifling the Holy Spirit. This is because the Holy Spirit helps us pray when we don’t know what we should ask the Lord.

But what does Paul mean in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, when urging believers to “pray without ceasing?”

Paul doesn’t mean that Christians should pray all day. This is both impractical and impossible, as we wouldn’t have time to fulfill daily responsibilities or maintain our health.

Instead, scholars teach that to pray without ceasing is to be aware of and depend on God in all circumstances. They liken prayer to breathing since believers have the privilege of experiencing God’s presence and grace, which influences our lives.

Paul’s awareness of God’s presence and grace amid suffering compels him to pray. Scripture proves this as he intercedes for churches and seeks God while in prison

The early church also shows the significance of prayer as the disciples prayed before casting lots to determine Judas replacement. The early church also sought God for boldness to preach the Gospel despite threats from those united against Jesus.

7 Ways to Practice 1 Thessalonians 5:17

So how can modern believers follow the example of the early church and regularly seek God by praying without ceasing? Pastor Tyrone Queen provides readers with seven practical steps that believers can begin or recommit to as we strive to mature in prayer this year.

The sermon is posted at the bottom of this section for readers who desire a detailed explanation of the steps. I will list them below and highlight my experiences with two of these approaches.

Therefore, the seven steps are as follows

  1. Establish a set time to pray.
  2. Spend time reading and listening to the Bible.
  3. Start your prayer by appreciating God.
  4. Practice praying scripture.
  5. Make a prayer list.
  6. Institute family prayer.
  7. Let the Holy Spirit lead you.

Letting the Holy Spirit lead you, and the other six steps are approaches I’ve heard before listening to this sermon. That said, being reminded of these steps brings back memories of habits I need to renew consistently in my prayer life.

I recall a season in my life when I’d routinely wake up between 5 and 6 a.m. to spend time with God. This time was precious, as the quiet allowed me to pour out my heart to God uninterrupted.

Early morning prayers also helped me practice adoration, honoring God without asking for something. These are two important strategies for prayer that allow all believers to reverence and keep God as the head of our lives.

2 Ways I Can Improve Practicing 1 Thessalonians 5:17

While I strive to keep God as the head of every area in my life, I admit I’m inconsistent at praying regularly. After listening to Pastor Queen’s sermon, I will strive to improve my prayer life in 2026 by applying two strategies.

First, I can allow the Holy Spirit to take the lead during my quiet time. This enables the Holy Spirit to pray through me amid my weaknesses and ignorance concerning what to pray for.

Additionally, the Holy Spirit can help me have a more structured prayer life. This is because the Spirit can compel me to talk with God concerning the people and circumstances he brings to my mind.

Following the Holy Spirit’s lead can only happen as I seek to grow and remain in relationship with him. Pastor Queen reminds listeners that prayer helps us stay connected with God.

Staying connected to our Heavenly Father allows us to experience his presence, power, guidance, and provision

Another way for me to grow in prayer is by taking the initiative to ask family members to spend time interceding together. This is a struggle for me because everyone has different schedules and varying views about God.

While everyone’s lives and views of God may be different, I believe prayer is the answer to life’s issues. Therefore, I’ll begin seeking the Lord about finding the courage and ways to invite my relatives to pray.

Peace When We Pray

Additionally, there’s an adage that says “the family that prays together, stays together.” This suggests that praying together can help families remain united and work through issues causing division.

Division ceases through prayer, as scripture promises that God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. We can also have peace after praying by trusting that God hears and gives us what we need according to his will.
