Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza

How and Why Youth Should Watch

Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza is a good movie to watch this holiday season. It is available on all streaming platforms, and if you don’t mind advertisements, Tubi airs the film for free.

Like most Christmas films, it captures the spirit of this annual celebration. That said, the true meaning manifests through the challenges students face at school, making it perfect for all adolescents.

Below, I’ll summarize and offer a critique of Mr.Santa. Afterward, I’ll explain how a few instances from the film relate to biblical principles that youth should apply to their lives.

Summarizing & Critiquing the Film

What makes Mr. Santa Worth Watching?

Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravagaza is about three high school friends who are intellectual geniuses and honors students. That said, their intellect doesn’t prevent two of the friends from expressing their excitement about Christmas.

The third friend (and main character), AJ, struggles to show excitement like her friends Logan and Keyara. AJ believes they are too old to be overly excited about the holiday season.

Along with their age, AJ also thinks their glee magnifies the fact that they are not popular among their peers. Consequently, they constantly argue with some popular girls, and another male student bullies Logan.

Thankfully,  bullying and conflict don’t stop the trio from producing their annual Christmas play. But being unpopular means the trio normally handles everything for the play, including performing all the roles.

However, their teacher, Mrs. Mackey, wisely makes participating in the play a graduation requirement for all honors students. This means the students must work together before the end of their high school journey.

While Mrs.Mackey’s strategy is brilliant, pregnancy forces her to take leave before the students can organize the play.

Conflict between the students continues, and the three friends’ hopes of conducting the play seem lost. Hope is restored when a substitute teacher (Mr. Santa Cruz) empowers students to work together to create the Christmas extravaganza.

In the end, the students produce a great play, and a few other blessings unfold that prove Christmas is magical.

Unique Attributes

Proving Christmas is magical isn’t the only factor that makes this movie interesting. Two other attributes that make Mr. Santa unique are the casting and the reliability to real life.

The casting is unique because Geoffrey Owens plays the role of Mr.Santa Cruz. Additionally, Feyisola Soetan plays the role of AJ Reese, who is the main character.

Both individuals are African Americans, which means Mr. Santa is a movie with Black lead characters. Consequently, this movie breaks the stereotype of Santa Claus being a Caucasian male.

While Mr. Santa has strong black lead characters, the cast is also diverse. This makes the movie an inclusive film that students from various backgrounds will find relatable.

Along with the casting, the film’s ability to incorporate real-life challenges authentically helps make the movie realistic.

For example, Timothy Griffin Allan (who plays Felix) bullies Logan. Felix’s motivation involves living in poverty, as his father struggles to provide for their family. This explains his frustration and why he was always taking Logan’s money.

Felix proves that no student is truly troublesome, but is misbehaving due to personal issues they can’t escape. Therefore, they need teachers like Mrs.Mackey who inspire them to rise above the circumstances they are facing.

Does Mr. Santa Have Room for Improvement?

While the film does a great job of incorporating real-life issues, it lacks a strong social media presence. Aside from students sharing a video of the three friends getting revenge on Felix, social media does not exist.

Since Mr. Santa was released in 2024, social media should play a bigger role in the film. A stronger social media presence will help the theme be more culturally relevant.

Another way the film can enhance its cultural relevance is by replacing textbooks and printed scripts with electronic devices. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools in America transitioned from paper-based learning materials to laptops and tablets. I wish the scriptwriters had included more modern technology to reflect a learning style more in line with the digital age.

How Mr. Santa Relates to Biblical Principles

AJ’s Faith

While Mr. Santa does not reflect the learning style of this generation, the film resembles America’s diverse culture.

This diversity doesn’t make the movie a biblically based production. That said, there are lessons the characters and themes teach that relate to biblical principles.

The first theme is to never give up on what you believe in, despite the challenges you face. AJ does this, refusing to stop believing in Santa Claus inwardly, though she’s angry that her father serves in the military.

AJ’s belief in Santa Claus relates to the Bible because of faith. Hebrews 11:6 suggests no one can approach, please, or experience the rewards of diligently seeking God without faith. AJ’s belief in Santa Claus can encourage young Christians to keep believing in God, no matter what they experience. God is faithful and uses whatever trials they face to mature and complete them.

Courage & Giftedness in Mr. Santa

Along with trusting in God through faith, young believers can learn about courage from Logan. With support from AJ and Keyara, Logan finds the courage to stand up to his bully, Felix.

Felix also finds the courage to believe in Santa Claus and celebrate Christmas, though his family is Jewish. Logan’s bravery teaches young people what it looks like to be strong and courageous amid intimidation.

Logan’s willingness to celebrate Christmas despite being Jewish teaches youth that faith in God requires you to go against what’s customary. This is what Jesus means when referring to how believers must carry their cross and love him more than family to be his disciple.

Being Jesus disciple also means adolescents must learn to embrace the gifts God gives them. 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 shows that every gift is necessary and matters in God’s kingdom.

Keyara came to this realization after AJ chose to give the lead role in the production to someone who performs the part better. Keyara was angry until her father reminded her of how well she designs the sets and props for the production.

Keyara’s experience teaches youth that they don’t need to focus on being the star of the show or the center of attention. Instead, they must focus on using their abilities to glorify God. Only then will they receive the Lord’s approval and be valuable to others around them.

Division Versus Unity

Being valuable to others can only happen when individuals combine their gifts and unite as a team. Unfortunately, immaturity and selfishness lead to conflict among students throughout most of the film.

The situation became tense, and some of the popular girls attempted to sabotage the extravaganza. Thankfully, Mrs. Mackey returns during the show and prevents them from completely ruining the entire show.

This shows young believers that no weapon formed against them will prosper. It also teaches them that whatever others mean for evil, God will turn it around for their good.

When the youth decide to put their differences aside and work as a team, they create a great show. These results show young believers the benefits of teamwork and unity.

This is a valuable lesson all believers should learn from, as God requires his people to dwell together in peace and unity. So let’s strive to embody peace and unity for everyone we encounter.

Who knows, our conduct may be what they need to experience God’s love this holiday season.
