Jaxon Smith-Njigba, A Star Wide Receiver

The Source Behind His Humility

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a star wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks. Though National Football League (NFL) fans shower him with adoration, he strives to remain humble. What (or shall I say who) is the source compelling Jaxon to demonstrate humility amid success?

Below, I’ll answer this question by talking about Jaxon’s upbringing and journey to the NFL. Then I’ll connect how his faith in God shapes his character, compassion for the community, and advice to young athletes.

A Star is Born in Nacogdoches, Texas

Jaxon Smith-Njigba Loves His Family

Jaxon Smith-Njigba was born on February 14, 2023, in Nacodoches, Texas. He is the youngest son of Maada Njigba and Jami Smith. Along with Jaxon, the couple has one older son, Canaan Elijah Smith-Njigba.

These three individuals played and continue to have a major impact on Jaxon’s life. He credits his mother, Jami, for giving him his competitive nature.

He also honors her for her unwavering support and willingness to stand up to those who unjustly criticize his play on the field. She even has a list of individuals whom she won’t allow to interview Jaxon because of past comments.

Her response to critiques shows parents how they can combat the often cruel commentary of sports reporters.

While Jami’s actions are a positive example for other parents, Jaxson praises his father, Maada, for teaching him how to play football.

Maada got his sons involved in football to tire them out and make their nighttime routine easier. Little did  Maada know his plan would be a stepping stone, preparing both sons to fulfill their destinies as athletes.

Canaan began his athletic journey by playing football at an early age. As a younger brother, Jaxon followed in his footsteps by falling in love with football at the age of three.

Realizing both his sons’ love for the game, Maada began training them. Maada’s training methods probably come from what he learned while playing linebacker at Stephen F Austin University.

Under his tutelage, Jaxon began doing 6 a.m. workouts during the summer and exercising on “Walmart Hill” near their local high school.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba Visualizing Greatness with Canaan’s Support

Before talking about Jaxon’s athletic performance in high school, let’s dive a little deeper into his childhood. As a child, Jaxon’s passion for football didn’t stifle when off the field. In fact, Jami describes Jaxon as a visualizer who’d set up scenarios in his living room and practice what he’d do if they occurred during a game.

He’d even ask his brother Canaan to play with him. This isn’t surprising since they did a lot together growing up, including getting in trouble for breaking household items

Along with getting into trouble, Jaxon talks about how Canaan was a cool older brother who’d get him into high school parties as a sixth grader. Canaan also helps him navigate the challenges of being a professional athlete.

Canaan can do this because he played professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Their relationship proves “a friend loves at all times and a brother is born for adversity.”

Jaxson Gains Attention on the Football Field

Becoming Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the Yellow Jackets

Adversity doesn’t seem to faze Jaxon on the football field. This is because he’s been exuding a level of confidence that shows he’s been destined for greatness since he was a young kid.

Texas residents began to take note of his greatness while he was a student at Rockwall High School. As a Yellow Jacket from 2016-2020, Jaxon played in all three phases of football.

Offensively, Jaxon acquired the following totals as a wide receiver

  • 245 receptions.
  • 63 touchdowns.
  • 5,384 yards

Along with 5,384 receiving yards,  he earned 395 rushing yards on 76 carries with 11 touchdowns.

Defensively, Jaxon continued to perform well, recording 20 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 3 fumble recoveries, and 4 interceptions.

Additionally, Jaxon gained 1,462 yards and 2 touchdowns as a returner. These stats helped Jaxon become a 5-star recruit and earn the following accolades

  • 2x Player of the Game.
  • 6x Player of the Week.
  • Being named 1st Team All-Area
  • Being named the Top Wide Receiver in Dallas by the Dallas Morning News.
  • Being ranked the 5th Best Player in Texas
  • Earning a 1st Team Class 6A All-State Selection.
  • Playing in the Army All-American Game.

Facing Adversity as a Student at Ohio State

Earning awards like playing in the Army All-American Game helped Jaxon earn a scholarship to the Ohio State University (OSU). In the classroom, Jaxon majored in health sciences.

On the field, Jaxon played in 21 games with the OSU Buckeyes,  acquiring the following stats as a wide receiver

  • 101 receptions.
  • 1, 541 yards.
  • 8 touchdowns

Producing stats like catching eight touchdowns and over 1,500 receiving yards allowed Jaxon to achieve the following

  • Being named a 3rd Team All-American.
  • Being named 3rd Team All-Big Ten Conference.
  • Earning the 5th most receptions in Big Ten history with 95.
  • Earning the 2022 Rose Bowl MVP.
  • Setting an all-time Rose Bowl Game and OSU record with 15 receptions, 347 yards, and 1 touchdown.

While setting a Rose Bowl record is impressive, the feat didn’t exempt Jaxon from facing adversity. He endured a lingering hamstring injury during the first game of his junior year.

The injury caused him to miss the remainder of the season. Setting out for that length of time caused critics to question whether Jaxon was quitting on his team in preparation for the NFL draft.

Such an accusation makes Jaxon appear selfish, putting his personal interest before what’s best for the team. Thankfully, Jaxon’s parents know his true character and publicly defended his decision.

Jaxon’s OSU teammates also defended his decision. I believe a large part of their support stems not only from being teammates but also from watching him model his Christian faith daily.

In fact, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, C.J. Strout, and other teammates established a Christ-centered culture that remains instrumental to the football program. Their example proves that a Christ-centered culture can help teams stay united when outsiders try to cause division

Maturing as an athlete in a culture committed to Christ has helped Jaxon remain humbly confident while celebrating his success. Jaxon does so because he understands that it’s God who grants him opportunities to be successful.

Consequently, he strives to capitalize on these opportunities by demonstrating a consistent work ethic and praising God in all things.  This humble cautiousness to publicly honor God has allowed Jaxon to experience the promise of exaltation in due time.

One example of his exaltation is being drafted as the 20th pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Another example of his exaltation is his performance on the football field.

In three seasons as a Seahawk, Jaxson has accomplished the following regular-season totals through 51 games

  • 282 receptions.
  • 3,551 yards.
  • 20 touchdowns.

He’s added to these totals with 13 receptions, 172 yards, and 2 touchdowns in two playoff games. In his most recent playoff game, Jaxon caught 10 receptions, 152 yards, and 1 touchdown in a win against the Los Angeles Rams.

The two-time Pro-Bowler’s stellar performance during this victory is a huge reason why the Seahawks are playing in Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots.

After the victory, he continued his commitment to honor God by acknowledging him during a post-game interview.

More About Jaxon Smith-Njigba

The JSN Family Foundation

Honoring God isn’t simply lip service for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He knows his faith must include charitable acts that demonstrate concern for those in need. Jaxon praises his parents for instilling this value in him, which cultivated his compassion for the community.

As a result, Jaxon created the JSN Family Foundation in 2025 to empower individuals and the community through a lifestyle of service. Their mission is to uplift through meaningful acts of service and inspire others to rise to their purpose.

The foundation is built on the biblical principle in 1 Peter 4:10, which compels believers to use their gifts to serve others. Jaxon serves Seattle communities through charitable acts such as

  • Repping the JSN Family Foundation on his cleats to raise money for scholarship opportunities for the youth.
  • Hosting a food drive to support Feeding Feasible Feast.
  • Hosting a friendsgiving with Devon Witherspoon at Mary’s Place to feed needy families.
  • Visiting the burn unit at a local hospital during Christmas.

When Jaxon retires, he wants to continue serving the community by building a school and being in a position to help the world.

Advice from Jaxon Smith-Njigba

One way Jaxon is currently helping the world is through the advice he gives to youth. In an interview with Athlete’s Aura, he advises athletes to handle the pressure of being an athlete by

  • Leaning on those you trust.
  • Remembering the results aren’t everything, just workhard.
  • Responding to challenges with a positive and teachable attitude.
  • Standing on your faith.
  • Being structured and disciplined with your time in the off-season.

He also encourages youth to remember that through God, anything is possible. Then he urges them to work hard, knowing the same effort they give is what they’ll get in return.

Similarly, Jaxon challenges them to ask their supporters how they can get better. When they get this advice, work hard and watch what happens.

Advising Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Likewise, I’d like to play the role of a chaplain for a moment by offering advice to Jaxon, encouraging him to listen and see what happens.

First, I encourage him to keep honoring God as his top priority. The Lord will reward his boldness, even if being bold makes him seem corny or endure unjust criticism.

God will also honor him as he follows Proverbs 16:3 by committing his plans to the Lord.  Proverbs 16:9 also says humans make plans, but the Lord directs our steps.

Therefore, surrendering his plans will help them be established in alignment with God’s will and time. Additionally, God will place Jaxon in divine positions where he can simultaneously achieve his goals and bless those in need.

Staying devoted to God allows his character to reflect Jesus Christ in ways words and charitable acts cannot. Consequently, he’ll uphold a good name and obtain favor, which is more valuable than great riches.

Lastly, I’d advise Jaxon to finish getting his bachelor’s degree. Doing so will prove he’s a hardworker in and out of sports.

Additionally, obtaining a degree will show young fans they can be successful in career fields that don’t involve athletics. Future generations of his family will also benefit from him completing his academic journey, as he’ll be leaving them a legacy to follow.

For now, both his family and fans can’t wait to see what exciting plays Jaxon will make as he hopes to help the Seahawks win Super Bowl LX.
