The Karl Barth and Katy Perry Song Challenge

The Karl Barth and Katy Perry Song Challenge November 4, 2014

Okay peeps, as part of the Ridley Follies, I’ve re-written the lyrics to the Katy Perry song “I Kissed a Girl and I Liked it” to “I Read Karl Barth and I liked it.” Idea comes from Jessica Parkes, but execution is strictly my own.

See the lyrics below.

What I want to know is whether there are any Barth-loving ladies out there – maybe at Princeton or Duke or Houston – who could record the song and make a video. I think it would be not just hilarious, but Conan O’Brien hilarious (which is like Mike Bird hilarious but about a foot taller)!

I Read Karl Barth and I Liked it

This was never the way I planned, not automatic.

I got so brave, book in hand, read Church Dogmatics.

It’s not what I was told, he’s big on salvation.

I’m curious for him, now on election.

[Chorus]

I read Karl Barth and I liked it

He’s so Christological.

I read Karl Barth just to try it

Hope my pastor don’t mind it.

It felt so wrong

It felt so right.

I’m reading Römerbrief tonight.

I read Karl and I liked it (I liked it).

No, I don’t ever read Van Til, he doesn’t cut it.

But Barth is incarnational, Christ with two natures.

It’s not what good girls do, not what they’re supposed to read.

My head get so confused, from reading his German.

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

Karl Barth is highly orthodox

God’s word comes down in threefold form

Hard to hold liberal doctrine

Christ is God, don’t deny it.

It’s Barth’s big deal, Christ is the Word!

[Chorus]
